Gerberas: the simplest looking flower with the fussiest stem

Gerberas standing in shallow water in a narrow vase with heads resting on the rim

On a shop shelf the gerbera looks like the least complicated thing in the bucket. A round head, flat clean colour, no scent to negotiate. In practice its stem needs more attention than any other flower sold in volume.

The structure explains it. Gerbera stems are hollow, covered in fine hairs and unsupported by any woody core. They soften in deep water, rot at the cut and buckle under the weight of the head.

Rules that double the vase life

There are only three, and each one visibly changes the result.

Keep the water shallow, three to five centimetres. This is the single biggest difference between gerberas and everything else on the table, and it is the rule people break first.

Change that water daily and recut the stems every second day. A hollow stem clouds water faster than any other and cloudy water blocks the cut end within a day.

Use a narrow vase, or a wide one with a grid across the top, so the heads rest on the rim. Without support the stems curve over time and the bouquet opens out into a fan.

What to buy and how many

Two types share the shelf and they are priced differently.

Large flowered gerbera has a head roughly the size of a palm and is sold by the stem. Five make a bouquet that reads clearly across a room.

Mini gerbera, often labelled germini, is smaller and cheaper. It works by volume, and fifteen or more is where it starts looking deliberate rather than sparse.

Bright bouquet of mixed colour gerberas in a low glass vase

Gerbera colour is dense and literal, with almost no half tones anywhere in the range. Mixing three or four bright shades is possible, though the more colours go in, the more the bouquet drifts towards a children's party. A single colour armful reads considerably more grown up.

A gerbera forgives most things except a deep vase. Half a glass of water suits it better than a full litre.

Who they suit

Gerberas read as cheerful with no subtext attached, which is rarer than it sounds. They have no scent at all, so they fit places where fragrance is unwelcome: a hospital room, an office, a home with a small baby, a colleague's desk.

They go to maternity discharges, birthdays, congratulations after an exam or a defence, and to anyone whose mood needs lifting without any romantic implication.

For delivery around Abu Dhabi, remember that gerbera heads dislike compression. Ask for loose packaging or a box, because a tight cone creases the outer petals and the damage is visible the moment the wrapping comes off.

JFLOO carries gerberas as a single variety bouquet and inside mixed work. Remember the one rule about water depth and this bouquet outlasts what most people expect from it.
