Iris bouquets: what happens on day two
An iris arrives shut. What you unwrap is a tight green spear with a thread of colour along one seam, and the flower itself is still a day away.
This is deliberate. An open iris is thin enough that almost any packaging creases it, so growers cut and ship in bud and the bouquet is handed over in that state. The person receiving it sees cones and leaves, and the volume in their hands comes mostly from foliage. Say so as you hand it across, because the first reaction otherwise is quiet disappointment.
The second day is the one worth waiting for.
The sequence in the vase
Within a day of standing in water the bud unwinds. Three outer segments fold down and out, three inner ones stand upright, and the flower ends up roughly twice the size of the object that was delivered. What was a seam of colour becomes the whole surface. A day or two later that individual flower is already going, the segments softening and twisting into a damp rag. Then the next bud on the same stem takes over, because there is usually more than one waiting.
So the maintenance is simple and it is not optional. Pinch each spent flower off at its base with your fingers and the stem carries on with its remaining buds looking clean.
Water should be shallow and cool. The lower stem is fleshy and turns slimy when half of it stands submerged, which fouls the water and blocks the cut. Two fingers in the vase is plenty, topped up rather than deepened.
Warmth speeds all of this up. A vase beside a radiator runs the whole cycle in half the time, and a bouquet that had a week in it is finished in three days.
What the flower does to an arrangement
Iris brings its own architecture. The leaves are long straight blades that hold a vertical line with no added greenery, and the head sits at the top of a clean stem with nothing in between. A bunch of iris in a plain glass cylinder needs no filler, no eucalyptus and no ribbon. Adding those usually makes it worse, because the sword shapes stop being visible against a mass of soft leaves.
It is also close to scentless, which is why iris bouquets end up in meeting rooms and hospital wards where lily would be a problem.
Mixing works with flowers that want the same conditions. Tulips are the obvious partner: spring stems, cool water, shallow vase, and both keep growing after they are cut. Roses want deeper water and warmer handling, so in a shared vase one of the two is always compromised.
Buying and receiving
Most cut iris is grown from bulbs under glass, which is why it is on the bench for much of the year rather than in spring alone. Spring stems are still the better ones, thicker in the stem and carrying larger buds and more of them. By high summer the material thins out, with narrow buds that open fast and shed just as fast. On delivery, look for a bud that is firm, showing a little colour at the tip, with a seam that has not yet parted. A wholly green bud with no colour anywhere was cut early and may never open at all.
Brown creases across a bud mean pressure in transit. The tissue is thin and does not recover, so the mark is still there once the flower opens.
Timing matters more with this flower than with most. Send iris to someone who will be at home for the next few days, in Astana or anywhere else, because a bouquet collected on the way to an airport is a bouquet that never opens. Handed over at the start of a quiet week it does what few cut flowers manage, which is change shape while you watch it.
