Flowers in Bangalore: from KR Market at dawn to a bouquet at the door

KR Market wakes at two or three in the morning, and trading peaks somewhere between four and eight before the wholesale stalls close by noon, with baskets of jasmine, marigold, roses, chrysanthemum and tuberose changing hands in the dark. Most of that goes to temples and garlands; flowers in Bangalore ordered as a gift take a different route, put together to order once payment clears and photographed before the courier sets off.

Flower delivery in Bangalore: the free centre, Indiranagar and Kengeri

Flower delivery in Bangalore breaks into three pieces: free in the centre, a flat rate further out, and arranged separately at night. Inside the centre, deliveries run free of charge from 7 am to 11 pm, and if the florist already has the bouquet ready, it can leave within 45 minutes of the order being confirmed. Move past the centre and two rings apply:

  • Indiranagar, Jayanagar and Basavanagudi, Malleshwaram and Rajajinagar, Frazer Town and Benson Town — a flat delivery fee applies, shown at checkout
  • Marathahalli and Bellandur, Kengeri and Rajarajeshwari Nagar — further out, where a higher flat fee applies

Between 11 pm and 7 am delivery still runs, but by arrangement, with the price quoted separately rather than fixed in advance.

For a hotel, the courier needs the guest's family name exactly as it appears at check-in, plus a room number if it's known. Reception then decides whether the box goes up to the room or stays at the desk. A hospital is worth checking first, since some Bangalore wards don't allow flowers on the floor at all. When that happens, the courier leaves the bouquet at the nurses' station, or delivery waits until the day the patient goes home.

Kempegowda International Airport sits about 35 km north of the centre and is served on request, the courier waiting at the exit with a sign. A gated community works the other way round: the courier rings from the gate rather than walking in.

Sending flowers to Bangalore from another country needs only the recipient's phone number; the sender's name never has to appear, and every price on the site is in rupees. The dollar, euro or rouble figures in the header are for reading only, since the bank converts the charge at its own rate, and the flower delivery terms add nothing on top.

In Bengaluru bright pinks and corals read as a celebration, which is why a bouquet here rarely goes out all white.

Bangalore's office clusters sit well outside any of the delivery rings above. They include:

  • Outer Ring Road and Whitefield — ITPL is roughly 18 km from the centre
  • Electronic City
  • Manyata Tech Park — roughly 300 acres
  • CV Raman Nagar
  • MG Road and UB City — the older business addresses in the centre

An address in any of them is priced before payment rather than guessed at, since it falls outside the standard zone list.

The order form asks for the company name and the floor rather than a street number, and where a tech park runs access control, the bouquet goes to reception and the sender is told who signed for it. For a desk shared with colleagues, a lightly scented, bright but restrained arrangement works better than a heavy, fragrant single-flower one — mixed bouquets tend to fit that brief.

Where a business park has access control, the bouquet goes through reception and the sender is told who took it.

Festive flowers in Bangalore lean toward marigold, roses and jasmine, and bright colour reads as a celebration far more reliably than restraint does. A fully white bouquet is worth avoiding as a gift, since white flowers, and white garlands especially, carry a strong association with funerals; a few other colours mixed in with white roses reads very differently to an all-white arrangement.

Handing a bouquet over also has its own small courtesy. It goes to the recipient with the right hand, or with both hands together, and the price tag comes off before it ever leaves the florist.

Bengaluru's flower year: Dasara, Lalbagh and 14 February

Dasara's final days, Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami, fall a day apart each autumn, and the dates shift every year with the lunar calendar. Rajyotsava, Karnataka's formation day, falls on 1 November, and Balipadyami follows a few days later as a public holiday, its date also moving each year.

Lalbagh's flower show in the Glass House runs twice a year, around 26 January and around 15 August. Varamahalakshmi, in August, fills KR Market from the night before, and puja flowers rise sharply in price for the day.

8 March is marked here too, though it is not a public holiday, and Mother's Day, which falls in May, is marked as well, its date shifting each year. Around any of these dates, delivery windows widen and the courier stops promising to the minute, so ordering ahead matters more than the exact slot. Browsing the 36 most popular bouquets ahead of a peak date is a reasonable way to book one before the good slots go.

April heat, monsoon doorsteps and air-conditioned offices

Bangalore sits on a plateau around 920 metres, and the dry season runs from December to April. By April, daytime temperatures push past 30°C, and a bouquet left in a parked car or on a sunny windowsill wilts far faster than one kept in water and shade.

The monsoon runs from June to October, and September is usually its wettest month, so a fair number of doorstep handovers happen under a porch roof rather than in the open. Indoors, air conditioning dries the air as effectively as the sun does outside, which makes changing the vase water more often worth the habit.
