February 14 — Valentine's Day in Bangalore: red roses in auction week

February 14 — Valentine's Day in Bangalore — falls in the busiest week at IFAB, the flower auction on Bellary Road in Hebbal that opened in 2002 as Asia's first international flower auction. Through that week the auction moves hundreds of thousands of roses a day. Choosing a bouquet here comes down to three things: the colour, the format and the moment it reaches the table.

Red for the fourteenth, with a festive colour beside it

Valentine's Day is widely celebrated in Bangalore, and the flower most people reach for is red: 11 Red French Roses. French, here, is not a variety but a finish — the florist reflexes the outer petals by hand before the bouquet is tied. Bright, festive colour suits Indian gift-giving on a day like this, and red carries that on its own.

White reads differently. In India white flowers are linked with funerals, so 11 White French Roses are not the safe all-occasion pick they might be elsewhere. The better move is to ask for colour alongside them, or to send a mixed bouquet with a stronger palette instead. For a table for two in Bengaluru, the bouquet travels in her hands rather than waiting on a chair.

In Bengaluru the fourteenth often ends at a table for two, and the bouquet stays in her arm rather than on the chair.

Hosur sits just over the Karnataka border, in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, and its glasshouses are the region's main source of greenhouse roses. Through Valentine's week, flights out of Kempegowda International Airport, roughly 35 km north of the city, carry roses on to some 25 countries, with Malaysia, Kuwait and Singapore among the largest buyers.

In one recent February, Hosur's growers sold more of their crop within India than they exported, and the retail price of a red rose in Bangalore climbed through that week.

Flowers for an order are bought only after payment, the florist assembles the bouquet to the brief, and it is photographed before the courier leaves.

A box, a basket or a floral handbag for the evening

A box or a basket stands on its own, which matters at a restaurant table, or at home when there is no time to find a vase. Flowers in boxes and flower baskets both hold their stems in soaked floral foam, so the arrangement is watered daily, a thin stream over the whole exposed surface, and never tilted.

A floral handbag or a potted plant needs no vase either. Beside the flowers, a cake, a balloon or chocolate can be added at checkout as an extra with the bouquet, and a card with a short message comes free with any of them.

Valentine's flower delivery in Bangalore on the busiest day

The fourteenth is one of the three busiest days on the calendar, and on days like this order numbers run far above normal: delivery windows widen and couriers stop promising an exact minute. Placing the order several days ahead keeps the widest choice of slots; leaving it to the last day narrows them fast.

For a restaurant booking, the time is agreed with the venue's staff in advance, and the bouquet is timed to arrive for dessert or the toast rather than at the start of the evening. The card can carry a signed message or stay anonymous, whichever the sender prefers.

Charges by area are set out on the delivery page. A hotel order needs the guest's surname and, if known, the room number; with no address, the recipient's phone number is enough.

Start with the roses if red is the plan, move to a mixed bouquet for a brighter palette, and pick a box if there is no vase waiting at the other end. February 14 — Valentine's Day in Bangalore — rewards ordering a few days early, whichever of the three you choose.
