Baskets with garden roses: what the first three days do to the shape
A garden rose is bred to open rather than to hold a cone. The bloom carries many short petals in dense layers, the outer ones fold back into a cup while the inner ones stay bunched in a tight centre, and an open head can reach twice the width it had on the day it arrived. In an arrangement where nothing can be moved afterwards, that doubling has to be allowed for before the first stem goes into the foam.
So the build is deliberately loose on day one.
Spacing that looks like a mistake
Customers who compare a delivered basket with a catalogue photograph often think something is missing. The heads are set apart, a little of the greenery shows between them, and the whole thing looks airier than expected. By the third day those gaps have closed on their own and the dome the florist designed is the one standing on the table.
The opposite case is worse and cannot be fixed. Heads packed tight on the day of assembly have nowhere to grow, so they press into each other, the outer petals crease and fold back over their neighbours, and by the end of the week the arrangement is a solid mass with brown lines where the pressure was.
How much it drinks
Petal count and cup shape both cost water. Every open bloom presents a wide surface to the room air, and the foam holds only what fits in the container, so this composition wants topping up daily rather than twice a week. Pour a thin stream at the rim until the surface stops taking it. Check with a fingertip at the edge each morning, where damp foam springs back and leaves a wet mark and dry foam crumbles under the nail. Foam that has dried through takes water back poorly, and the flowers standing in it have already lost a day by the time anyone notices.
Heat doubles the rate. A radiator below the table dries the block from underneath while it forces the blooms open at speed.
The centre reports first
Look into the middle of the flower rather than at the petals. A dense multi-layered centre browns before anything shows on the outside, usually after a swing in humidity or a night spent next to a heater, and once it has gone the head will not recover.
The neck under the head is the second thing to check, at delivery and later. It should be firm to the touch, because a heavy petal-packed bloom on a soft neck tips forward before it has finished opening, and in foam there is no way to prop it up.
The week after that
Outer petals bruise at the edges before the flower is finished. Take them off one at a time with your fingers and the bloom stays clean, smaller than it was but still worth looking at. A spent head is cut off level with the foam rather than pulled out by the stem, and the gap it leaves is covered with a leaf, since foam does not seal itself and that spot no longer holds water.
