Peonies with delivery in Budapest: varieties, Budapest weddings, and a short season

A peony needs no explanation in Budapest. A large, densely packed, fragrant head speaks for itself — people choose it when they want the bouquet to say something without a card. A city of thermal baths, Danube views, and the grand sweep of Andrássy Avenue knows how to appreciate that kind of restrained luxury. We built the catalogue with exactly that taste in mind.

The category includes single-variety bouquets from 9 to 51 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, and hatboxes for corporate and wedding orders. The peony season in Central Europe is short — the main peak runs through May and June. In Budapest that coincides with the wedding season: celebrations at Buda Castle, on Margaret Island, in country estates, and at the Etyek vineyards fall in exactly these weeks.

Which varieties to choose

We work with four sources: Dutch-grown peonies for volume and consistency, French garden varieties on long stems for cutting, historic American hybrids that are world standards, and local Hungarian peonies from the Great Hungarian Plain, which come in a short window in May and June. Below are the varieties most often requested in Budapest.

• Sarah Bernhardt — soft pink-salmon, large head, lasting fragrance. One of the most recognised wedding varieties in the world, and the default request for Budapest weddings.
• Coral Charm — coral fading to peach as it opens. Semi-globe form at the early stage. Looks excellent in modern arrangements for restaurants in Belváros and Erzsébetváros.
• Karl Rosenfield — deep raspberry-red, dense bud, intense fragrance. A classic for anniversary and ceremonial bouquets.
• Duchesse de Nemours — pure white with a cream centre. Suits the bridal bouquet and white ceremonial arrangements.
• Bowl of Beauty — pink outer petals, cream-yellow centre. Its anemone form is an unconventional, visually striking choice for large installations.
• Juliet (David Austin peony rose) — technically a rose, but close to a peony in form and character. Used as a stand-in out of season or to add fragrance to peony arrangements.

Occasions and seasonality

May and June are the main peony months in Budapest. Most weddings fall in this period, especially at country estates, on the vineyards of the Hungarian wine belt, and in the historic halls of Pest. The peony is a traditional part of the wedding décor: the bridal bouquet, table arrangements, arches, boutonnières.

The start of the peony season lines up neatly with Anyák napja — Hungary's Mother's Day on the first Sunday of May; the earliest peonies arrive just in time for it. Beyond weddings, peonies are chosen for milestone birthdays, the late-May Ballagás graduations, and as a gift for a business opening. Nőnap (8 March) and Bálint-nap, by contrast, have little to do with peonies — there are no local peonies yet in February or March, so roses and tulips carry those dates.

Freshness and logistics

Dutch peonies reach Budapest from the Aalsmeer auction by overnight refrigerated truck — around 1,400 km and a 15–17 hour run. A morning lot is distributed to the city's florists the next day through the Bosnyák téri virágpiac flower market in Zugló. In May and June this is supplemented by growers from the Great Hungarian Plain, while French garden varieties from Brittany and Provence arrive by air at the peak of the season.

Peonies are delivered at the "pea-sized bud" stage — still closed; opening takes 2–4 days depending on temperature and variety. If you need open peonies for a specific date, tell us when you order and we'll choose a batch with the right lead time. At +18°C a peony opens fully in about 3 days; at +10°C, in 5–6 days.

Delivery specifics in Budapest

Budapest's climate is temperate continental, in the Pannonian Basin: summers are hot and dry, +26–30°C and above +35°C in heatwaves. For open peonies this is the main risk — hot, dry air speeds up petal drop, and early heatwaves can hit as soon as June. We assemble event batches with the forecast in mind and keep the flowers in cold storage at +4…+6°C until assembly.

We deliver peonies across all districts of Budapest: Belváros and Lipótváros (V), Várkerület and Buda (I, II), Terézváros (VI), Erzsébetváros (VII), Józsefváros (VIII), Ferencváros (IX), Újlipótváros (XIII), Újbuda (XI), Hegyvidék (XII), Óbuda (III). Payment is in forints (Ft, HUF). For wedding orders, allow at least 7–10 days. For June celebrations we recommend booking the date as early as April: the peony and wedding peaks overlap, and the good material is reserved well ahead.

Care at home

Peonies in a closed bud keep well at +4°C for 5–7 days. To speed opening, move them to a room at +18–20°C. Cut the stems at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, use cool water and change it every 1–2 days. A Chrysal sachet speeds opening and extends the flower's life.

Don't place peonies near fruit — ethylene from ripe apples and bananas causes premature petal drop. Budapest apartments often warm to +22–24°C in winter, so keep the bouquet in the coolest room.
