Small flower baskets: the gift that fits an ordinary day
Not every message needs volume behind it. A great deal of what people actually want to say sits somewhere between a text and an anniversary, and a small arrangement covers that ground better than anything larger, precisely because it does not announce itself from the doorway.
It is also the only floral format that survives an office desk.
Desk life
A desk is a hostile environment for flowers. There is a keyboard, a monitor stand, papers that move around, a mug that gets refilled, and somewhere in that a courier is expected to leave a gift. A wrapped bouquet lies across half the surface until somebody finds a container, whereas a basket the size of a mug goes down beside the monitor and stays out of the way.
Nobody has to leave the room to deal with it. Nobody ends up quietly responsible for finding a vase in a building that has none.
At the end of the week it goes home on a bus or in a car footwell without being taken apart, which is more than can be said for a tall vase full of water.
The occasions it suits
Thanks, apologies, and the visits where the recipient is unwell are the three that come up most. In a hospital room the reasoning is purely physical: cabinet space is shared with a jug, a phone and whatever the patient brought in, so a compact base earns its place and a wide one does not.
There is also the case of a person who already has flowers. A second large arrangement in the same room competes with the first and neither wins, while a small one finds a shelf and reads as a separate thought.
And there is the gift that has to travel with its recipient.
Students, guests staying somewhere temporarily, anyone who will move on within a week: they can carry a small basket in one hand, and the arrangement arrives in the new room in the same condition it left the old one.
What to look at when it arrives
Everything about a small arrangement is seen from close range and mostly from above, so the build has nowhere to hide. Look down into it. The heads should sit at even heights with no foam showing between them, the greenery should close the rim all the way round, and the base should be flat enough that the basket does not rock when you set it down on a desk.
Then put a fingertip on the foam at the edge. It should be cool and damp and should spring back rather than crumble.
That check is worth repeating every morning. A small block of foam holds a correspondingly small amount of water, it dries from the surface down, and one warm day beside a laptop takes more out of it than two cool ones on a windowsill.
Small flower baskets last about as long as fresh cut stems in a vase, which in practice means most of a week, and the thing that shortens it is almost always a forgotten top-up rather than the flowers themselves.
For a recipient in Cuba the format has one more advantage worth knowing. It can be left with a colleague, a porter or a neighbour without any instructions attached, and it will still be presentable when its owner finally gets to it.
