Blue baskets: an object that has to hold a spot in the room
A bouquet is a gesture with a short public life. It is admired, cut down, put in a vase and after that it belongs to the kitchen. An arrangement in a container is furniture for a week: it is placed once, it is seen from across the room by everybody who comes in, and the wall behind it becomes part of the gift whether anyone planned that or not.
Blue is the shade most affected by that arrangement of facts.
Why blue steps back
Cool colours read as further away than warm ones at the same distance. A red or yellow arrangement moves towards the viewer and holds the eye from the doorway, while a blue one settles into the depth of the room and can be missed entirely by someone walking through.
Two things make that worse in a container. Blue pigment absorbs a great deal of light, so any head that sits in the shadow of its neighbours stops reading as blue and becomes a dark gap in the volume. And a standing arrangement is always seen against something: a grey partition, a dark wooden cabinet, a blue office panel, any of which will swallow it.
The fix is not more blue. Pale companions do the work: white, cream, silver-toned foliage and grey eucalyptus give each head an outline and let the colour register at four or five paces instead of one.
Lilac and mauve are the neighbours to avoid. Standing two steps back, the eye stops separating them from blue and the whole arrangement flattens into a single soft field.
Rooms where it works and rooms where it disappears
A pale wall, a light desk, an office with cool overhead lighting: blue keeps its clarity in all of them and looks deliberate rather than decorative. Warm domestic bulbs pull it towards violet and cost it some purity, which is not a fault so much as something to expect from the photograph you get back.
A dim corridor is the worst case. Blue is the first colour to go flat when the light drops, so the arrangement that looked strong on the workbench turns into a grey shape by the lift.
Windowsills are the other place to avoid, and for a different reason. Direct sun breaks down pigment quickly, and it is harder on dyed flowers than on natural ones.
Where the colour comes from
Deep blue almost never occurs in cut flowers. Delphinium, eryngium, muscari, iris and hydrangea on acid soil are close to the whole natural list, and everything else in that shade has been dyed, either through the stem or with a surface spray.
That is worth knowing before delivery rather than after.
Dye moves. A stem-dyed rose keeps releasing pigment into the wet foam, and if the block has been overfilled the tinted water reaches the liner and the weave, where it stays. Sprayed flowers do not stain anything but rub bare at the edges when heads are packed tightly together, showing the original white underneath. Neither is a defect in itself, and both are reasons a careful builder leaves air between the heads rather than pressing them into a solid dome.
Who receives them
Blue baskets go where the gesture should be plain rather than affectionate: a professional milestone, a colleague's promotion, an office opening, a congratulation handed over in front of other people. The shade does not flirt and does not hint, which is exactly the point.
The one place it struggles is a hospital room, where the light is usually cool and hard already and blue turns grey under it. If someone in Didim is sending flowers to a ward, a warmer colour will do more for the room.
