Peonies delivered in Doha: varieties, the import season, and the bud stage

The peony needs no explanation. A full, globe-shaped bud, dense layers of petals, a light honeyed scent — that's enough for a bouquet to speak without a label. In Doha people reach for it when the occasion matters: a wedding, a milestone, an engagement. Not to tick a box, but when the bouquet should say it all on its own.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 9 to 51 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, and hat boxes for wedding and corporate orders. Unlike the rose, the peony is an honest seasonal flower. Qatar has no plantations of its own, so every peony arrives on cargo flights into Hamad International Airport — mostly from the Netherlands, and in the off-season from the Southern Hemisphere.

Which varieties to choose

Each variety solves its own task — from a classic romantic bouquet to a complex wedding arrangement. They differ in bud shape, palette, scent, and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a soft pink-salmon double bud with a lasting scent. One of the most recognised wedding varieties, the default request for celebrations.
  • Coral Charm — coral shifting to peach as it opens. Strong in modern arrangements.
  • Karl Rosenfield — deep crimson-red, a dense bud, an intense scent. A classic for milestone bouquets.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson fleck at the centre. The most photogenic white peony, a wedding-floristry classic.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — snow-white with a cream heart and a light scent. Suits the bridal bouquet and pale ceremonial arrangements.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony, blooming larger and longer than the usual ones.

The bud stage and why it matters

The main rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. That's a coloured but still soft bud about the size of a walnut. If it springs slightly under your fingers, it will open in 1–2 days and last 7–9. A hard green one may not open at all; a fully open one lasts 2–3 days at most.

Every lot passes a hand check by the florist against this criterion. Only "marshmallow" buds of the right firmness go into dispatch — so the recipient sees the full bloom cycle, not the final stage. If you need open peonies for a specific date, say so when ordering and we'll choose a lot with the right head start.

Occasions and season

The peony's natural season in the Northern Hemisphere is late spring and early summer, mainly April through June. In those weeks the Dutch cut flows steadily, the choice of varieties is wider, and the price is lower. This coincides with wedding season — the peony traditionally goes into both the bridal bouquet and the table styling.

Outside the spring window, the catalogue is topped up by shipments from the Southern Hemisphere — Chile, New Zealand — where the peony blooms during our winter. These lots cost more and are less predictable, but they keep the peony on sale almost year-round. For an important date it's still worth ordering ahead.

"The peony doesn't forgive haste. If you want to impress, order 3–4 days ahead and let the bud open at the recipient's home. And remember: it's a seasonal flower, its peak is spring. A fresh closed peony from a Dutch lot beats a cut tired out over a week, however lovely it looks on the display."

Wedding bouquet of peonies and eucalyptus for the West Bay and The Pearl districts of Doha

Delivery specifics

Doha's climate is hot desert. Summer is long and scorching, +40…+46°C from June through September, with high humidity added near the Gulf. For the peony the main risk is overheating: hot air speeds up petal drop. Lots for events are built with an eye on the forecast, and until assembly the flowers are kept in cold storage at +4…+6°C.

We deliver peonies in Doha across all districts: West Bay, The Pearl, Lusail, Msheireb, Al Sadd, Katara, Al Waab, Aspire, Al Rayyan, Education City. Catalogue prices are in Qatari riyals (QAR, ر.ق), paid by card or cash on receipt. The supply season is limited, so for weddings and major dates order 3–5 days ahead — peak weeks sell out early.

Care at home

Peonies in a closed bud keep at +4°C for 5–7 days. To speed up opening, move them to a room at +18–20°C. Cut the stems at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, keep the water cool, and change it every 1–2 days. A Chrysal sachet speeds opening and extends the flower's life.

Don't place the peony near fruit — ethylene from ripe apples and bananas causes premature petal drop. On hot days keep the bouquet in the coolest room, away from the direct flow of the air conditioner; on days above +40°C move it to the refrigerator overnight — that adds 2–3 days. Message our manager and we'll help match the variety and stem count to the occasion and budget.
