Forty-five roses: the week that starts after the courier leaves

Roses being trimmed at an angle before going into a vase

A bunch this size drinks harder than most people expect. Forty-five stems in one binding pull the level down overnight, and a narrow vase can be dry at the bottom by the time anyone thinks to look.

Almost everything that shortens the life of this count happens in the first hour, before the flowers have even been looked at properly.

The first hour

Cut stems travel dry or in a shallow bucket, and by the time they reach a hallway the cut ends have begun to seal over. Take the wrapping off straight away, trim two or three centimetres from each stem at a slant, and strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline. Submerged leaves rot within a day, cloud the water and block the stem ends faster than anything else you could do wrong. Fill the vessel two thirds full rather than putting a token amount in the bottom, because a bunch of this weight empties a shallow vase in a night. Then leave it somewhere cool for a few hours without rearranging it, since a cold start buys days at the other end.

Nobody enjoys doing this at eleven at night, which is why the wrapping often stays on until morning and the flowers pay for it later.

Heat, not age, is what finishes them

Fresh cut roses hold for roughly one to two weeks indoors, and where a particular bunch lands in that range comes down mostly to temperature. A radiator under the shelf, a sunlit sill in the afternoon, a closed room in summer: each of them takes days off. The same forty-five roses in a cool hallway and in a warm sitting room look like two different purchases by day five.

Density adds a second problem that smaller counts do not have. When heads sit shoulder to shoulder, air stops moving between them, and the petals at the points of contact darken before the outer ones do. Turning the bunch a quarter every day, or loosening the binding slightly once it is in water, keeps that from spreading.

What the outer petals are for

A large bunch of roses divided between two vases in a cool room

The coarse, sometimes bruised petals on the outside are guard petals. They protect the bud in transit and they are meant to come off.

Peel one or two from each head and the bunch looks a grade better, but stop there. Strip too far and the head loses the layer that holds its shape, then opens flat and blows within a day.

Splitting it, and when that is sensible

Not every home has a vessel wide enough at the neck for this volume. The bundle at the binding point is thicker than a wrist, and forcing it into a narrow vase crushes the outer stems and stops them drinking.

Two containers are better than one bad one. Half the count in each still reads as a large gift, gives every stem water and lets you put flowers in two rooms.

If the person in Doha receiving them is out for the day, ask for the bunch to be left standing in water rather than lying flat in a box. Stems lying on their side curve upward within hours as the heads reach for the light, and that bend does not straighten out again once the flowers are in a vase.
