Occasions in Dublin: anniversaries in August, Mothering Sunday in Lent

In 2024 August was Ireland's most popular month to marry, with 13.4% of marriages against 3.2% in January, according to the Central Statistics Office. Occasions in Dublin tend to follow that same Irish calendar rather than an American one, so the choices below start with a date, not a flower.

Married on a Friday in August: the anniversary bouquet that follows

Friday and Saturday together accounted for 62.3% of Irish weddings in 2024, and the single busiest dates were Friday 21 June and Friday 6 September. A couple who married at the tail end of the working week tends to mark the anniversary the same way, which means a bouquet timed for dinner rather than for the breakfast table.

Two subsections cover the date itself: a wedding anniversary for any year, and a golden wedding for the fiftieth. Red roses, kept simple, suit a couple marking the day together, and a box holds its shape better on a restaurant or kitchen table than a hand-tied bunch does. Eleven Red French Roses is one straightforward way to put that into words. Grafton Street's flower sellers bring in peonies and hydrangea through the summer, which is where a second, late-August choice comes from: the Hydrangea and Misty Bouquet. January anniversaries are the rarest on the calendar, just 3.2% of weddings, so a winter bouquet for the date is less common than a summer one.

Mother's Day in Ireland is Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter. The date moves every year and always falls in spring, usually in March; the American custom of a May Mother's Day is not kept here. The Mother's Day bouquets section carries its own range for the date.

Easter has a subsection of its own, and Easter flowers sit alongside it; Easter Monday is a public holiday, which shifts some deliveries to the Saturday before. The fourteenth of February is marked widely in Dublin, and the flower sellers on Grafton Street raise their prices for the day. The eighth of March is not a public holiday in Ireland, though orders for it are still taken as usual. Around all three dates, 14 February, 8 March and Mother's Day, order numbers climb well above a normal week. Delivery windows widen, and no courier promises an exact minute, so the safer course is to place the order several days ahead rather than on the day itself.

Before a calendar holiday, bouquets are made in batches and stand in buckets of water.

Four subsections cover a family's own dates rather than the national calendar: the birth of a child, hospital discharge, christening and housewarming. Dublin's own christening customs are not something to guess at, so the useful detail here is the format and the address rather than tradition.

Many Dublin wards do not accept flowers at all, so it is worth checking what wards and hotels allow before sending anything to a hospital. A bouquet meant for discharge is often better sent to the home instead, timed for the day the new arrival gets there. A basket needs no vase, since the stems sit in soaked foam, and that foam wants a thin stream of water over its whole surface every day rather than a single pour. For a christening or a new address, a box of peony-shaped roses says the occasion without naming it; Peony Roses Bubbles No. 3 is one option among several, not a rule.

Thank you, apology, date night, thinking of you and an anonymous delivery share one thing: none of them needs a date on the calendar, so they can go out any day at all. The card can carry a message or stay blank, and the courier works from a name and an address without needing to know why the flowers are being sent. A phone number for the recipient works just as well where there is no address to give. A photo of the finished bouquet goes out before the courier leaves, so the sender sees exactly what is on its way. Where a death notice on rip.ie asks for "family flowers only," that request is followed. Delivery itself runs by delivery zones, free in the centre and charged by zone further out, with no promise of an exact time on the booking.

A wedding anniversary is the easiest place to start for a couple, with the wedding anniversary range built around the date rather than the year. For a parent in March, the Mother's Day bouquets section is already sorted by Mothering Sunday. And where no occasion fits, an apology bouquet needs nothing more than a name and an address: most orders go out the same day they're placed.
