Freesia bouquets: a gift that arrives half finished

Most bouquets peak on the doorstep. The box opens, the flowers are at their best, and every day afterwards takes something away. Freesia works the other way round, because the spike opens one bloom at a time from the bottom upwards and the top buds are still shut when the courier hands the box over.

The recipient watches the rest arrive over the following week.

Why that changes the purchase

Judge the bunch by the buds, not by the open flowers. One or two blooms open at the base with a firm row of buds above them is exactly what you want; a spike already open along most of its length has done the interesting part somewhere else.

Green, glassy-looking buds at the tip usually open in time. Buds that have gone papery or brown at the edges will not, and that part of the spike stays bald.

This also decides how the gift lands. Sending a flower that unfolds slowly suits a recipient who is at home to see it happen, and it suits an occasion you want to stretch out rather than concentrate into one evening. For a party table needing full effect in two hours, something already open serves better.

The stem is the weak part

Everything else about this flower follows from a thin stem carrying a one-sided head. The spike leans and curves under its own weight, so the stems will not stand straight in a wide vase and the bunch develops a front and a back whether you planned one or not.

A narrow neck solves most of it. Stems support each other, the curves settle into one direction and the arrangement reads as deliberate.

Handle the stems as little as possible while arranging. They snap cleanly at the point where the spike joins the stalk, and a broken one cannot be rescued or disguised. This is also why freesia travels wrapped with the heads well clear of the box wall.

Keeping the queue going

Deadheading is the one job that matters here, and it pays back immediately. As each lower bloom finishes it turns translucent and browns, and if it stays on the spike it spoils the look and holds back the buds above it. Pinch the spent flowers off with your fingers rather than cutting the stem, since cutting removes the buds you are waiting for.

The rest is ordinary. Fresh water every other day, a clean vase, a fresh cut on the stems, no radiator and no direct afternoon sun.

Cool rooms extend the sequence noticeably. Warmth pushes several buds open at once, which looks generous for a day and then leaves the spike finished early, while a cool windowsill keeps the openings spaced out and the bunch going for longer than most fresh cut flowers manage.

Scent, briefly

The perfume is strong but clean, citrus over a little sweetness, and it does not sit heavily in a room the way lilies do. It builds as the spike opens, so the bouquet smells of almost nothing on the first evening and is at its best around the middle of its life.

That delay catches people out. Somebody who unwraps freesia bouquets expecting an immediate wall of scent will think they were sold something faded, when in fact nothing has happened yet.
