Surprise boxes: a gift built around one second
A surprise box is a large open bottomed cardboard cube with helium balloons waiting inside. The lid comes off, the balloons rise on their ribbons, and the actual present is left standing underneath. The entire construction exists for the moment of opening.
Which points to the thing most often overlooked at ordering. The contents are not the gift. The reaction is, and that makes the room and the person holding a camera more important than anything inside the box.
How it is assembled
The box is either built on site or delivered ready, depending on size. Balloons are filled with helium, tied to the base or to the present inside, and covered with the lid.
- Standard sides run from sixty to eighty centimetres.
- It holds between five and fifteen balloons, usually helium filled latex.
- The base is left clear or holds flowers, a soft toy, or a wrapped gift.
- The outside is finished with printing, ribbon or a name sticker.
There is also an air filled version. Those balloons do not rise, they tumble out sideways, and the effect is a spill rather than a launch. Worth knowing, because the two look identical in a product photo.
Where it works
The format needs ceiling height. In a flat with a two metre seventy ceiling the balloons hit the plaster instantly and there is no vertical moment to film.
Outdoors is worse than people expect. Wind takes the balloons sideways the instant the lid comes off, so the launch becomes a lurch.
The right conditions are an indoor space with a high ceiling and no draught: a large living room, a hall, a function room. The second condition is a named person with a phone, because the whole thing lasts a few seconds.
A surprise box is engineered for one second. If nobody filmed it, what remains is a box and some balloons on the ceiling.
Practical notes for ordering
Dimensions decide most of it. The box does not fold, large sizes do not fit a car boot, and not every one of them fits a lift.
Helium in latex holds for roughly eight to twelve hours, so the box is assembled on the day of the handover. An order for the following morning means rebuilding it, not storing it.
For a delivery in Dushanbe, state the floor and whether there is a lift. The courier is carrying a rigid cube, and a staircase in an older building becomes a job of its own.
Afterwards the box stays in the room. Decide in advance who removes it, particularly when the surprise is being staged in somebody else's flat or in an office.
