Wedding flower baskets: the hour before anyone sees them
Almost nothing about a basket at a wedding is a gift decision. These are pieces of set dressing, delivered built, carried in through a service door and put down in an order somebody worked out in advance. The whole of their working life happens in a window nobody photographs, and that window is where they succeed or quietly fail.
They are chosen because they solve a venue problem.
A basket brings its own water in a block of soaked foam, stands free on its own base and needs no plinth, no plumbing and no fixing to anything. Most of what a venue forbids in its contract concerns exactly those things: nails in panelling, tape on paint, tanks of water above a timber floor, anything blocking a fire exit or a service run. A free standing arrangement that can be lifted away by one person passes those clauses without an argument.
Marking positions before the flowers arrive
Set the places first, then bring the arrangements to them. A basket that gets put down, considered, and shifted three times drags its base across the floor, and on polished timber or a pale carpet that shows for the rest of the day.
Symmetry is the thing that gets fixed too late. Pairs either side of an aisle or an arch are photographed together in one frame, so a difference in height that nobody notices at close range is obvious in every picture taken from the back of the room.
Where guests actually walk
Aisles narrow once chairs are occupied and skirts spread. An arrangement that sits comfortably clear of the walkway during setup ends up brushed by every third person during the processional, which knocks stems loose at the edge and, occasionally, the basket itself.
Doorways deserve a measurement rather than a glance. A tall build goes through a double door and stops at a single one, and the awkward moment always arrives with the arrangement already in somebody's arms.
Floors want protecting under the base. A liner keeps water off the weave, but condensation still forms underneath a full block through a long warm day.
Making one basket do two jobs
Ceremony and reception rarely happen in the same room, and the ceremony flowers sit unseen for the rest of the night unless somebody moves them. Baskets move well, which is most of their appeal on a day like this. Two people can shift a pair during the drinks reception without tools, and the same arrangements greet guests again beside the top table.
That plan needs a named person and a named hour, written into the running order rather than assumed.
The end of the night
Somebody has to take them out. Venues want the room clear by morning, planners have usually gone, and whoever is left standing inherits the job by default. Agree beforehand whether the florist collects, the venue disposes or guests take them home, and if it is guests, remember that a piece built to read from four metres is not the size anyone wants in a taxi.
