Decorative candles: wax, wick, and the first burn
A candle bought as a gift comes down to three things, and appearance is the last of them. Wax first, wick second, format third.
The wax decides how it burns and how it smells. Paraffin costs least and soots readily in a draught. Soy burns longer and more evenly while softening at a low temperature. Beeswax burns longest of the three and carries a honey scent of its own with no fragrance added.
The first burn decides everything after it
Container candles and wide pillars have a property the trade calls wax memory. On the first burn the wax melts out to whatever depth it reaches, and every later burn repeats that boundary.
Which gives one rule. Let the first burn run until the melted pool reaches the edge across the whole surface. For a container seven or eight centimetres across, that means about two hours.
Snuff it earlier and the candle tunnels: a narrow shaft burns down the middle while the walls stay solid, and half the wax never gets used.
Wick maintenance
Trim the wick to roughly five millimetres before each lighting. A long wick smokes, blackens the glass and shortens the candle's working life.
- Snuff with a lid or a cap rather than blowing it out. Less smoke, less burnt smell.
- Keep it out of a draught, otherwise the flame leans and the wax burns down unevenly.
- Fish out any burnt wick fragments so they do not float in the pool.
- Wash the container in hot water once the wax is gone and reuse it.
Two habits double the life of a candle: a trimmed wick and a full first burn.
Scented against unscented
A scented candle beside fresh flowers creates a direct conflict. Lilies, freesia, stock and lisianthus all carry their own fragrance, and the room ends up with a blend nobody selected.
For a gift that accompanies a bouquet, an unscented candle is the safer choice. It supplies the light and stays out of the argument. Scented candles make more sense as a gift on their own.
Containers and tins beat pillars as presents. The wax stays where it belongs, nothing runs onto furniture, and both snuffing and carrying are simpler.
