Balloon bouquets: a cluster built to be handed over
A balloon bouquet differs from room decor in its purpose. It is not installed, it is placed in somebody's hands, and that changes the requirements. Weight, ease of carrying and how the cluster behaves in motion all matter, not just how it looks against a wall.
The structure follows from that. A bouquet usually contains one element carrying the meaning, several supporting balloons, and a weight holding the whole thing down.
How they are assembled
- A base of round balloons in one or two ranges.
- One shaped element: a number, a heart, a star or a themed silhouette.
- A few clear confetti balloons for lightness.
- Ribbons of varying length, which give the cluster its depth.
Varied ribbon length matters more than the number of balloons. A cluster on identical ribbons looks flat and loses its shape as soon as it moves.
Keep the quantity moderate. A large cluster is awkward in a car and in a room, and the recipient is left working out where to put it.
Occasions
Birthdays, homecomings, congratulations at work, dates, anniversaries, children's parties, finishing a course of study.
Handing one over at work imposes limits. The cluster has to fit through a door and into a lift, then travel home on public transport in the evening.
For children choose a compact version they can hold themselves. A large bouquet gets handed to an adult within minutes.
Balloon bouquets often accompany flowers or something sweet. In that case keep them small, so they do not compete with the main gift.
Height matters more than width. A cluster taller than the person carrying it catches on doorframes and branches, and arrives looking battered.
Attach the card to the weight rather than to a ribbon. On a ribbon it obstructs the carrier and is the first thing to go missing.
Judge a balloon bouquet not by how many balloons it holds but by whether it is comfortable to carry.
Practical notes
Helium balloons hold their lift for a limited period, which is confirmed when ordering.
A weight is essential. Without one the cluster reaches the ceiling within a minute of changing hands.
In windy weather cover a bouquet with a transport bag. An open cluster outdoors behaves like a sail.
