Hyacinth: one stem fills a flat
Hyacinth differs from the rest of the spring group in one measurable way. A single stem scents a room for a whole day, and five in a closed bedroom become too much of a good thing by evening.
It is a bulb flower, and cut bulb flowers behave differently from ordinary stems. Two or three details double the life of the bunch.
Bulb, cut end and water level
Hyacinth is sold two ways: cut, or still attached to the bulb. The bulb version lasts longer, because the plant continues feeding the flower.
Cut hyacinth goes into shallow water, two or three centimetres. That thick fleshy stem turns soft in a deep vase within a couple of days.
The stem also keeps growing after cutting, adding several centimetres in the vase. The proportions of the arrangement shift accordingly, and by day two the bouquet stands taller than it did when it arrived.
Hyacinth sap irritates skin on prolonged contact. Florists handling crates of it wear gloves. For a bouquet at home, washing your hands after recutting is enough.
Dosing the fragrance
The scent is dense and sweet with a honeyed edge. Cool air softens it, warmth amplifies it.
- One stem for a bedroom.
- Three for a living room or kitchen.
- Five or more for a large ventilated space.
- For an office or a hospital room, choose something else entirely.
Colour correlates only loosely with intensity, though varieties differ. Whites and blues generally register as gentler than the bright pinks and magentas.
Buy hyacinth with your nose rather than your eyes. Whatever it does in the shop, it does twice as much at home.
As a gift
Hyacinth reads as a domestic spring present. It suits early spring birthdays, March celebrations, and anyone who actively likes a strong fragrance rather than tolerating one.
The potted or glass grown bulb version works as a gift with an afterlife. The bulb can be planted out once flowering finishes, although a repeat performance indoors is rare.
In mixed arrangements hyacinth pairs with tulips, irises, ranunculus and muscari. It overrides the scent of its neighbours nearly every time, so putting other fragrant flowers beside it is wasted effort.
For a cold weather delivery in Istanbul, ask for closed packaging. The flower spikes snap in frost, and a heavy head on a chilled stem breaks off at the first knock.
