Blue bouquets: the colour that hides inside a mix
Blue recedes. Put a handful of blue stems into a mixed arrangement and from three steps back they stop reading as flowers and start reading as gaps between the other colours. The eye treats dark cool tones as distance, which is useful in a painting and awkward in a bouquet.
Every practical decision about blue follows from that one habit.
Mass, not scatter
Scattered single stems vanish. Grouped in threes and fives, in clusters rather than evenly spread, the same flowers register as a colour rather than as shadow, and the arrangement gains a rhythm instead of a speckle.
Height helps as well. Blue placed slightly higher than the surrounding heads catches light on the upper surface of the petal, while blue buried at mid-depth reads as a hole in the profile.
The natural material makes this harder than it sounds. Delphinium, eryngium, muscari, forget-me-not, agapanthus and a few irises carry the only genuinely blue flowers in commercial supply, and almost all of them are small-headed, so a florist is building mass from many little pieces rather than placing three large heads.
Which neighbours work
White is the reliable partner because it gives the eye somewhere bright to land, and blue read against white looks a shade deeper than it is. Cream does the same job more softly. Pink works when it is cool rather than coral, since a coral pink and a true blue share no undertone and the join between them turns grey.
Yellow beside blue is a real combination, but only with a third colour in between. Left touching, they cancel each other and the bouquet looks noisy rather than bright.
Foliage matters more here than in any other palette. Silver-toned eucalyptus and dusty miller sit with blue naturally, while a glossy yellow-green leaf drags it towards grey and makes the whole mix look tired.
Hydrangea, the one large blue head
Hydrangea solves the mass problem in a single stem, and it brings its own quirk. Its colour depends on the soil the plant grew in, since acidic ground with available aluminium gives blue heads while neutral ground gives pink from the same cultivar, so two deliveries of one variety can genuinely differ and both are correct. That variation is worth agreeing on before the bouquet is built.
There is no blue rose, chrysanthemum or gerbera in nature, so those arrive tinted. Tinted stems behave normally in water, colour the vase water within a day, and mark a pale cloth if a wet petal touches it.
Blue bouquets suit the occasions where red or pink would say too much: a new son, a colleague's birthday, an opening, a professional thank you. Whatever goes into it, ask for the blue to be grouped rather than scattered, because a recipient in Lima will see the bouquet from across a room long before they see it up close.
