Tulip delivery in Limassol: Dutch groups, the March peak and care in a hot climate

The tulip brings a sense of real spring to Limassol — short and almost imperceptible on a southern island where winter is mild and summer long. A bright armful of tulips on the table reads as a promise of the season, and in March the city is awash with them. Cyprus has no fields of its own, but quick air logistics from the Netherlands make the tulip available for most of the year.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, market-style bunches in kraft, box compositions and mixed builds with hyacinths, ranunculus and eucalyptus. Tulips work at any budget: a modest bunch of nine to eleven stems looks no worse than a monumental armful of 51 — variety and presentation decide it.

Groups and varieties in the catalogue

More than 3,000 tulip varieties are registered worldwide. The working shelf holds 35–45 key ones, split by bud form, stem length and flowering character.

  • Triumph — the classic cup-shaped bud, 40–50 cm stem. The largest group. Varieties: Strong Gold (yellow), Negrita (purple), Ile de France (red), Purple Prince (purple).
  • Darwin Hybrid — large-headed, bud diameter up to 12 cm. Apeldoorn (scarlet), Ivory Floradale (cream). For large armfuls and accent bouquets.
  • French Tulips — long-stemmed premium tulips up to 70 cm. Maureen (white), Menton (soft peach). For weddings and high-end floristry.
  • Parrot — parrot tulips with fringed petals and a "torn" texture. Rococo (red), Blue Parrot (blue-purple). For signature and dramatic compositions.
  • Double / Peony — double, peony-form tulips. Mount Tacoma (white), Foxtrot (pink), Angelique (pastel pink). An alternative to peonies out of season.
  • Queen of Night — an almost black, deep-purple shade. For signature floristry and striking contrasts.

Season and the main occasions

The tulip's natural season is April–May. Through glasshouse forcing, the Dutch run flowering from October to June, and that covers the main Cypriot occasions. The strongest surge is 8 March: in Limassol's Russian-speaking community the tulip is unrivalled on that day, and lots are snapped up in advance. Then come Valentine's Day (14 February), Orthodox Easter (Πάσχα) and Mother's Day. For 8 March and Mother's Day, place the order seven to ten days ahead.

The cool season on Cyprus — November to April — is ideal for the tulip: this is its natural element. Summer heat, on the other hand, it tolerates poorly, so in the hottest months it gives way to flowers more resistant to warmth.

A tulip's quirk: it keeps growing

A cut tulip is a living plant. In the vase the stem grows another 2–3 cm in the first days, and the bouquet changes shape day by day: by the end of the first week the tulips "lean" toward the light — this is normal and pretty, not a fault. To keep an even shape, use a tall narrow vase that holds the stems upright.

A fresh tulip is easy to spot: a firm, cool stem, a tightly closed coloured bud, leaves without yellow spots. If the stem is warm and soft, the lot is already at its final stage. Every one of our deliveries is no more than four days from the cut.

"In Limassol the tulip is all about 8 March and the spring we so miss here. But in the warmth it hurries: in the heat it opens in a couple of days. The advice is simple — cold water, a cool room, no sun on the windowsill. Done that way, a tulip will stand for a week."

Freshness and logistics

Cyprus is an island, and tulips arrive by air. Dutch lots from the Aalsmeer auction fly in and land at Larnaca airport, about 70 km from Limassol. We carry tulips in cold hydro-boxes, the stems in water at +6 to +8 °C until delivery. A recipient in the Old Town or Germasogeia gets a full flowering cycle of five to seven days with proper care.

Delivery specifics in Limassol

Limassol has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers of +30 to +35 °C and mild winters of +15 to +18 °C. The tulip loves cool, so its best season here runs from late autumn to spring. In summer bouquets travel in chilled hydro-boxes and we schedule delivery for the morning or evening. The optimal window for the tulip is November–April.

We deliver tulips across all districts of Limassol: the Old Town, Molos, Neapolis, Mesa Geitonia, Agios Athanasios, Germasogeia, Potamos Germasogeias, Mouttagiaka, Agios Tychonas, Amathus, Ypsonas, Zakaki and the marina. Payment is in euros (€, EUR). Order ahead — three to seven days, and a full week for 8 March and Mother's Day.

Home care

The tulip needs a different approach from roses. The key rules: only cold water at +6 to +10 °C, a straight (not angled) re-cut every two days, and a minimal water level of 5–7 cm from the bottom. The tulip cannot stand deep water: the stems rot.

Don't place tulips next to daffodils without preparation: daffodil sap speeds up ageing by 30–40%. For a mixed bouquet, keep the daffodils apart for 24 hours, rinse the stems and only then add them to the shared vase. In the Limassol heat keep tulips under air conditioning, away from the window and the sun. Overnight you can move the bouquet to the coolest room — that adds two to three days of life.
