Fifteen peonies: the journey and the room it ends up in
An armful of peonies is a large, soft, top-heavy object that has to survive a car, a lift and a doorway before anybody looks at it. Most of the damage a bunch this size picks up happens in those few minutes.
The flowers are rarely the problem, the logistics are.
In the car
A bunch of this size does not lie flat on a back seat. Laid down, the heads on the underside take the weight of everything above them and arrive creased, and the crease does not lift out once the petals have set. Boot space is worse than a seat.
It travels standing, in a crate or a deep box, wedged so it cannot roll.
Heat is the second issue and the one people underestimate. A closed car in the sun warms up quickly, peonies respond to warmth by opening, and buds that left the workshop tight can arrive half open with the outer petals already soft. Air conditioning aimed at the flowers is no better, since dry moving air pulls water out of the leaves faster than the stems can replace it.
At the door
Fifteen peonies need two hands to hand over and a clear doorway to get through. Narrow hallways, revolving doors and crowded lifts all catch the outer heads, which is why couriers turn the bunch stems-first through a gap.
Somebody has to be there to receive it. Left with a neighbour or a concierge, an armful this size gets put down on its side, and that undoes everything the crate protected. Concierge desks rarely have space for it standing.
If you cannot guarantee a person at the address, agree an hour rather than a day when you order.
Where it lives afterwards
This count needs a surface it can own. A hall console, a wide sideboard, the middle of a table that is not used for meals: anywhere it can sit without being moved twice a day.
A vase with a heavy base is not optional, because once the heads open the centre of gravity rises well above the rim and a light vessel on a narrow table goes over the first time somebody walks past with a bag.
Radiators, hobs and sunlit windowsills all shorten the life of a large bunch faster than they shorten a small one, because a dense mass of open heads loses water through a great deal of leaf surface at once. The coolest corner of the room is the right one, even if it is not the most visible. Warmth also pushes every head towards its final stage at the same time. That is what turns a week of flowers into three good days. Anyone who has put an armful next to a radiator in winter has seen it happen.
What to ask for when ordering
Ask for the stems to be trimmed and the ends wrapped wet for the journey, and ask what the bunch travels in. Both questions tell you quickly whether the shop handles bunches of this size regularly.
Ask about the doorway too, particularly for a flat in Lisbon with a small lift, because that is where a big armful loses its outline.
The last request is the simplest one: have the recipient put it in water before they photograph it, not after. An armful will wait for a camera, but not for long.
