Hydrangea drinks through its head, and that explains everything

Florist splitting the woody stem of a hydrangea before placing it in water

Hydrangea has a reputation for being difficult. Half of that is fair. It does wilt faster than most cut flowers, but it wilts for one identifiable reason, and the reason has a fix.

The stem is woody and largely hollow, so it moves water slowly. The flower head above it is enormous and evaporates constantly. Everything hydrangea does in a vase comes out of that mismatch between what the head loses and what the stem can deliver.

The care that actually changes the outcome

Recut the stem at an angle and add a short vertical split running up from the cut. That increases the surface taking up water. Fill the vase higher than you would for roses, roughly a third of its height, and strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline.

If the head has already collapsed, lay the whole flower face down in cool water for half an hour. Hydrangea absorbs water across the entire bloom, and in most cases it comes back. The technique looks like a folk remedy and outperforms every sachet of powder.

Direct sun and a radiator nearby will cut the vase life by days rather than hours. Moving the vase to the coolest spot in the room overnight is worth the small effort.

How many stems is the right number

One hydrangea head is already the size of a small bouquet, so the arithmetic here does not resemble roses or tulips.

1. A single stem in a narrow vase looks like a finished object rather than half a gift. 2. Three make a proper table arrangement. 3. Five to seven give the dense dome most people picture when they order hydrangea. 4. Past nine you are mostly creating a carrying problem.

Colour depends on cultivar and on how far the bloom has matured. Late in the season heads often drift towards green and muted rose. That is ripening, not a fault, and those heads are the ones that dry best and stay in the room for months afterwards as dried stems.

Hydrangea forgives almost everything except an empty vase and a radiator within reach.

Where this bouquet fits

A hydrangea bouquet speaks quietly. It has neither the romantic insistence of red roses nor the brightness of gerberas, which is why it suits messages that want a softer register: thanks, a housewarming, a congratulation to an older relative, an apology delivered without drama.

It also works unusually well as a flower bought for yourself, since a single stem holds a room and takes almost no space.

For delivery in Maldives, weather deserves a thought. In real heat, an early or late slot beats midday, and the first thing to do after the handover is put the stems in water. Hydrangea copes with a cool hallway overnight far better than with an hour on a July windowsill.

JFLOO lists hydrangea both as a single variety bouquet and as the base of mixed arrangements. Either way the flower rewards one habit above all others: keep the vase generously full, and change the water sooner than instinct suggests.
