Daffodils cannot go straight into a mixed vase

Daffodils conditioning alone in a jar of water before being arranged

Daffodils have one property that keeps florists handling them separately. A fresh cut releases a slimy sap, and that sap blocks the water channels of every other flower sharing the vase. Tulips, roses and irises standing with freshly cut daffodils wilt within a day.

The remedy is old and simple. Stand the daffodils alone in water for six to twelve hours, let the sap run out, then move them into the mixed arrangement without recutting them.

Why the second cut matters

Cutting again restarts the sap release, which is why conditioned daffodils are transferred exactly as they are. That single instruction is the entire difference between daffodils and every other spring flower on the bench.

After that the care is ordinary. Shallow water, around a third of the vase, changed every second day. Cool conditions stretch the display to a week, while a radiator nearby cuts it to three days.

Their bulb origin adds one more trait. The stem is hollow and soft, so daffodils dislike tight binding and stand better as a loose bunch than as a compressed cone.

Varieties and scent

The differences between types are sharper than the shared silhouette suggests.

1. Trumpet daffodils with a long central corona, the classic yellow shape. 2. Large cupped bicolours, white petals around an orange or yellow centre. 3. Double forms, where the corona is replaced by a dense rosette of petals. 4. Tazetta types, several small flowers per stem and the most strongly scented of the group.

The fragrance is noticeable and, in some varieties, sharp. A large bunch of tazettas in a small room becomes heavy by the evening.

Condition daffodils alone for six hours and do not recut them. Those two rules cover every mixed bouquet they will ever appear in.

Occasions

Dense bunch of yellow daffodils in a plain ceramic vase

Daffodils belong to early spring. They arrive among the first flowers of the year and disappear by May, and around March dates they are one of the best value stems available anywhere.

A single variety bunch looks plain and domestic. Twenty one stems packed together read like an armful from a garden rather than a shop arrangement, and that is precisely the appeal.

They go to spring occasions, to mothers, grandmothers, teachers and colleagues. There is no romantic reading attached, and the seasonality gives the gift a specificity that year round flowers lack.

For a cold day in Minsk, ask for closed packaging. A hollow stem turns brittle in frost and breaks at the base without warning.

JFLOO carries daffodils as a category within the spring range. If a mixed bouquet is the plan, remember the conditioning step. It is the only complication this flower brings to a vase.
