Tulips with delivery in Monaco: varieties, Dutch imports, and freshness from the delivery

The tulip is floristry's most "spring" flower and the second most recognisable after the rose. A clean cupped form, quiet elegance, thousands of Dutch-bred varieties. Monaco does not grow tulips: they need the cold winters this Mediterranean climate cannot give. So it is an imported category — the buds fly in from the Netherlands, the world's tulip capital, through Nice airport. And on the warm Riviera the tulip then has its own storage rules, set out below.

The category covers single-variety bouquets, kraft-wrapped armfuls, box arrangements, and combinations with ranunculus, hyacinth, and narcissus. Supply is strongest in the Dutch season — roughly December to April, when the choice of varieties and colours is widest and the price most even.

Groups and varieties in the catalogue

More than 3,000 tulip varieties are registered worldwide. Some 30–40 key ones reach the shelves, split into groups by bud shape, stem length, and flowering time.

  • Triumph — the classic cupped bud, stem 40–50 cm. The largest group. Varieties: Strong Gold (yellow), Negrita (purple), Ile de France (red).
  • Darwin Hybrids — large-headed, up to 12 cm across. Apeldoorn (scarlet), Ivory Floradale (cream). For full-bodied bouquets.
  • French Tulips — long-stemmed tulips up to 70 cm. Maureen (white), Menton (soft pink). For wedding floristry.
  • Parrot — parrot tulips with ruffled, "torn" petals. Rococo (red), Blue Parrot (purple). For dramatic compositions.
  • Double / Peony — double "peony-flowered" tulips. Mount Tacoma (white), Foxtrot (pink). An alternative to peonies in the off-season.
  • Queen of Night — an almost-black purple, a legend in its own right. For gothic and vintage palettes.

Season and occasions

Tulip supply to Monaco follows the Dutch calendar: the peak runs roughly December to April. In these months the flower is at its freshest and most affordable, and it lands neatly on Saint-Valentin on 14 February and the spring holidays. By Fête des Mères at the end of May the Dutch season is already winding down, and the tulip becomes a rarity for that date.

The tulip's season here coincides with the most comfortable weather — the mild Mediterranean winter. The Riviera's summer heat is bad for the tulip, so its winter peak treats the cold as an advantage: the bud is easier to deliver in shape than in the scorching months. It is an honest seasonal flower, and within its window it opens at its best.

The tulip's quirk: it keeps growing

A cut tulip stays a living plant — the stem keeps growing in the vase by 2–3 cm over the first 2–3 days. This is a rare trait among cut flowers and must be allowed for when building a composition.

Because of it, tulips change the shape of the bouquet day by day. By the end of the week they bend towards the light source — this is normal and pretty, not a defect. To keep an even shape, set the bouquet in a tall, narrow vase that holds the stems upright.

"The tulip is the most honest flower on sale. It does not pretend to be fresh. Hold the stem in your hand — soft, warm? Then the bouquet is at its final stage. A fresh tulip feels firm, cool, and almost 'ringing' to the touch."

— Camille Béranger, florist with 15 years of experience on the French Riviera

Freshness and logistics

A fresh tulip shows in several signs: a firm stem, a tightly closed coloured bud, leaves with no yellow spots, no wilted edges. Tulips arrive from the Netherlands in closed buds and move through the floral wholesale tier; ripening happens at the recipient's place.

We carry tulips in cold hydro-boxes: the stems stay in water at +6…+8°C right up to delivery, and the bud keeps its firmness. On the warm Riviera this matters all the more — without the cold a tulip "flops" within hours. Before assembly we keep the bouquets in cold rooms at +4…+6°C.

Delivery specifics

Monaco's climate is Mediterranean: mild winters, warm dry summers, humid sea air. For the tulip this means it is easier to deliver in winter, in its own season, while on the rare warm off-season days it travels only on the cold chain and with morning delivery.

We cover every district: Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Fontvieille, Larvotto, Monaco-Ville, Moneghetti, Saint-Roman. We carry to the hotels and to yachts in Port Hercule. Catalogue prices are in euros (€), paid by card online. For Saint-Valentin, place the order 3–4 days ahead — peak dates sell out fast.

Care at home

The tulip is presented differently from roses and peonies. The key rules: only cold water at +6…+10°C, a straight (not angled) recut every 2 days, and minimal water in the vase (5–7 cm from the bottom). The tulip does not tolerate deep water — the stems rot.

Don't place them next to narcissi and hyacinths — their sap speeds tulip ageing by 30–40%. If you want such a composition, keep the narcissi apart for 24 hours, rinse the stems, and only then add them to the shared bouquet.

In warm Monaco coolness is what the tulip needs most: keep the vase in an air-conditioned room, away from direct sun through the window, and not under a flow of warm air. Fresh cold water and shade are all a tulip needs to last longer, even in a southern city by the sea.
