Gift boxes: a structure, not a wrapper

Open gift box with packing material and items arranged inside

What separates a gift box from a bag is that it holds its shape. Rigid walls, a solid base, a lid and internal packing turn a handful of separate items into one object that can be carried, set down and opened.

That is also where the advantage of the format comes from. Nothing shifts in transit, nothing knocks against anything else, and the act of opening becomes part of the gift rather than a preliminary to it.

What makes a box work

The construction matters more than the contents, because it determines whether the gift arrives in the state it was assembled in.

  • Wall material. Laminated rigid board carries weight and shrugs off damp.
  • Base. A double or reinforced base is not optional once glass or jars go inside.
  • Packing. Wood wool, shredded paper or a moulded insert keeps items in position.
  • Lid. A lift off lid opens more dramatically than a hinged one and takes up space during the handover.

The hat box deserves separate mention. The round form with a ribbon is used for both flowers and gifts, and it is the version recipients most often keep afterwards as storage.

What actually fits

Dimensions mislead. A thirty by thirty box looks capacious, and once the packing is in place the usable space is noticeably smaller.

The working rule is that packing occupies a quarter to a third of the volume. Plan the contents with that deduction applied, otherwise the lid does not close.

Fragile items go in the centre, heavy items at the bottom, light ones on top. A glass jar against a wall breaks the first time the box meets a doorframe.

A box protects the gift rather than decorating it. If the contents move inside, there is not enough packing.

Box or basket

A box closes, and that single property solves several problems. The contents stay hidden until opening, dust and rain stay out, and boxes stack when several orders travel together.

A basket does the opposite. It displays everything at once and suits situations where the look matters more than the surprise.

For an office, or for anything passing across a reception desk, a box is the easier object. A closed carton attracts no attention and does not spill during a hand to hand transfer.

If a box travels with flowers across Monterrey, mention it at ordering. One hand takes the box, the other takes the bouquet, and a third item does not fit that arrangement.

JFLOO lists gift boxes inside the bouquet add ons. Judge them on construction. Material, base and packing decide the outcome considerably more than the print on the lid does.
