Lilies come with a five minute checklist
Most cut flowers can be put in water and forgotten. Lilies cannot. Three decisions need making almost immediately after the bouquet is handed over, and all three become harder once the flowers have been standing for a day.
The reason sits in the structure of the bloom. Each stem carries several buds at different stages, every open flower has large anthers loaded with orange pollen, and the fragrance builds as more of them open.
The first five minutes
Remove the anthers. Pinch them out of each open flower with a tissue. Lily pollen does not wash out of fabric, and it will find a tablecloth, a shirt cuff and the petals of the flower below it.
Choose the room deliberately. In a closed bedroom the scent of oriental lilies becomes heavy by nightfall, and anyone sensitive to fragrance will not sleep through it. A hallway or a large living room handles it far better.
Check whether there is a cat in the house. Lilies are toxic to cats, and both the pollen and the vase water are dangerous. If there is a cat, the answer is a different flower rather than a higher shelf.
Why the count is in stems
A stem generally carries three to five buds that open in sequence across a week or more. That staggering is what gives lilies their long life in a vase and why the arrangement looks different every morning.
1. Three stems make a complete gift, provided the bud count on them is decent. 2. Five to seven build a substantial table arrangement. 3. Past nine the limit is usually fragrance rather than size.
The groups differ enormously. Oriental lilies are the large, heavily scented ones. Asiatic lilies are brighter and almost scentless. Longiflorum, the classic white trumpet, appears mostly in wedding and funeral work. The group name in a product description predicts the smell far better than any photograph.
Buy lilies in bud. A fully open bunch looks best in the shop and finishes noticeably sooner at home.
Where they belong
Lilies read as formal. They suit a milestone birthday, a large family occasion, a congratulation to an older relative, any event where the flowers are expected to carry some weight.
They are a poor fit for a desk, a small flat, or anyone with fragrance sensitivity, and that has nothing to do with quality.
