Fruit and flower baskets: the ratio is the whole decision
Two materials go into one container, and their proportion decides what kind of present arrives. Nobody discusses it at the counter. People talk about which fruit and which flowers, agree on a size, and then find that what turns up reads as a fruit hamper with a few stems pushed in, or as an arrangement with an apologetic apple beside it.
Ask for the balance you want and the rest follows.
Fruit does not share attention evenly
Set equal volumes of each side by side and fruit still wins. Its surfaces are glossy, its colours saturated and unbroken, and a cut melon or a bunch of grapes reads as one solid block, whereas flowers break light into a hundred small pieces and read as texture. An even split by volume therefore does not look even at all.
So a build that is meant to feel floral needs the flowers to outweigh the fruit visibly, not merely equal it. A build meant to feel edible can carry very few stems and still look generous.
Three honest proportions
Fruit led, with flowers as a frame. The gift is the food, the stems soften the outline and put colour above the rim, and this is the version for an office, a ward or any place the contents will be shared out.
The reverse puts the arrangement first and treats the fruit as an accent. Sent to a home, it reads as generosity rather than lunch, and it survives the day the food is eaten, because what stays behind is still a complete composition.
Genuinely even is the hardest to bring off. It needs a divide the eye can accept, a clear tier or a band of greenery running between the halves, otherwise the two sides argue with each other across the middle of the basket.
What holds the two apart
Whatever the proportion, the halves have to be built as separate structures inside one basket. Wet foam next to fruit shortens the fruit's life, sugary juice running the other way sours around the stems, so a liner, a low wall or a fitted tray sits between them and the flowers stand in their own vials or their own isolated block.
The test takes a second. Lift the floral side gently and it should come away on its own, bringing nothing edible with it.
Saying the ratio out loud
Order by what should be left standing tomorrow. If the answer is an arrangement, ask for a flower led build and accept less fruit. If the answer is a full table, ask for fruit led and let the stems do the framing.
That single sentence is more useful to the person building it than any list of varieties.
The proportion also sets the hour it should arrive. A fruit led basket wants a moment when several people are in the same room, because it is meant to be pulled apart while it is still cold from the workroom. A flower led one is far more patient and will wait at a reception desk or with a neighbour until the recipient in Nice comes home.
