Peonies with delivery in Nice: varieties, Riviera weddings, and a short season

A peony needs no explaining in Nice. The big, densely packed, fragrant head speaks for itself — people choose it when they want a bouquet that lands without a note. On the Côte d'Azur the peony is bound to May: the month of villa weddings, the month of Mother's Day, the month when the rose de mai and the gardens of the south all peak at once. We built the catalogue with that taste in mind.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 9 to 51 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, and hatboxes for corporate and wedding orders. The Mediterranean peony season is short — the main peak falls in May and June. In Nice that coincides with the wedding season: celebrations at the villas of Cimiez and Mont Boron, and in the gardens between Villefranche and Cap-Ferrat, run through exactly these weeks.

Which varieties to choose

We work with four sources: Dutch-grown peonies for volume and consistency, French garden cultivars on long cutting stems, historic American hybrids that are world standards, and peonies from the south of France that come in a short window in May–June. Below are the varieties most often asked for in Nice.

• Sarah Bernhardt — soft pink-salmon, a large head, a lasting scent. One of the most recognised wedding varieties in the world; on the Riviera it is the default request for ceremonies.
• Coral Charm — coral shifting to peach as it opens. Semi-globe form in the early stage. Looks well in modern arrangements for the Old Town restaurants.
• Karl Rosenfield — deep crimson-red, a dense bud, an intense scent. A classic for anniversary and formal bouquets.
• Duchesse de Nemours — pure white with a cream centre, bred in France. Suited to the bridal bouquet and white ceremonial arrangements.
• Bowl of Beauty — pink outer petals, a cream-yellow middle. An anemone form — an unusual, visually striking choice for large installations.
• Juliet (David Austin peony-shaped rose) — technically a rose, but close to a peony in form and character. Used as a stand-in out of season or to add scent to peony arrangements.

Occasions and seasonality

May and June are the main peony months in Nice. Most weddings fall in this period, above all at the coastal villas and in gardens with a sea view. The peony is a traditional element of wedding décor: the bridal bouquet, table settings, arches, buttonholes.

The season lines up neatly with French Mother's Day (Fête des Mères), held on the last Sunday in May; peonies arrive just in time. Beyond weddings, peonies are chosen for milestone birthdays, end-of-May and June graduations, summer celebrations, and as a gift for a business opening. Valentine's Day and Grandmothers' Day in February–March, by contrast, have little to do with peonies — there is no peony yet, and roses and tulips carry those dates.

Freshness and logistics

Dutch peonies reach Nice from the Aalsmeer and Royal FloraHolland auctions by overnight refrigerated truck along the A8 motorway — about 1,200 km. Lots are distributed to florists through wholesalers and the MIN d'Azur market in the Var valley. In May–June, French garden cultivars from Provence and the south are added, while early April lots come from greenhouses.

Peonies are delivered at the "marble-sized bud" stage — still closed; opening takes 2–4 days depending on temperature and variety. Delivery specifics in Nice

Nice has a Mediterranean climate, sheltered to the north by the Maritime Alps. Summers are hot and humid, +26…+30°C, with a sea breeze off the Baie des Anges. For open peonies the main risk is exactly that early-summer humid heat: warm air speeds petal drop, and the first hot days arrive as early as June. We build event batches with the forecast in mind and hold the flowers in cold storage at +4…+6°C until assembly.

Care at home

Closed-bud peonies keep well at +4°C for 5–7 days. To speed opening, move them to a room at +18–20°C. Cut stems at a 45° angle, remove lower leaves, use cool water, and change it every 1–2 days. A Chrysal sachet speeds opening and extends vase life.

Don't place peonies near fruit — ethylene from ripe apples and bananas causes premature petal drop. On the Riviera in summer, keep the bouquet away from direct sun and the air-conditioning flow, in the coolest room. Open, a peony lasts 5–7 days at +18–22°C and up to 10 at +10–14°C.
