Family Day flowers: an arrangement for a household, not a person

Low floral arrangement in the centre of a laid table

The International Day of Families falls on 15 May; several countries keep their own date, and in Russia the family holiday is marked on 8 July. The bouquet works the same way in every version: it is addressed to a home rather than to one recipient.

That changes how it is chosen. A gift bouquet is built around a person — her colour, his character. A family bouquet is built around the table everyone will sit at.

Low, not tall

A household arrangement lives on a shared table. It has to be low enough to see across and finished on every side, because people sit all the way round it.

A low vase or a lined box with floral foam beats a wrapped bouquet here. It stands on its own, nobody has to trim stems mid-preparation, and it does not tip over when the table gets crowded.

Flowers that read as domestic

Daisies, chamomile, matricaria, spray chrysanthemum, alstroemeria, garden roses, sweet peas, field greenery. A deliberately simple, meadow-like arrangement suits the day better than formal pink classics — the holiday is about the long and the ordinary rather than the impressive.

In the Russian version of the holiday the daisy is the emblem of the day and is recognised without explanation, which makes it an easy and unmistakable choice on 8 July.

Two households

Many people mark the day with their own family and their parents on the same afternoon. Two modest arrangements handle that better than one large one: they are given in different places at different hours, and neither becomes a logistics problem.

The card

The card is addressed to a couple or to a household, so name both. Writing only to one half of a couple on this particular day looks like an oversight, and it is the sort of thing that gets remembered.

Delivery

It is a home holiday and somebody is usually in, but morning is still the safer slot — families leave for lunch and outings. If the flowers are going to parents in Seychelles, name on the order who else may accept them; an arrangement left outside a door in summer will not survive until evening.
