Gold bouquets: living with a coated flower
No plant produces gold. Everything sold under the name owes its shine to something applied afterwards, and that coating changes how a bouquet has to be handled from its first evening.
Most of what follows is small and easy, provided nobody treats it like an ordinary bunch of roses.
Three finishes, three sets of habits
Metallic spray covers an open head with a thin film. A sprayed bloom stiffens slightly, loses almost all of its scent, and takes paint heaviest along its petal edge, so the rim always shines more than the centre.
Dry glitter sits on an adhesive base and leaves a reflective grain instead of a solid coat, which is why original flower colour still shows through. This is the finish that sheds. It comes off onto cloth, onto dark clothing and onto the floor around the vase for several days.
Gilded components leave the flowers alone entirely. Painted monstera or ruscus leaves, wheat ears, dried branches and honesty pods go in as separate material, so living stems keep their normal lifespan and their scent while metal arrives as texture. Anyone who wants gold without the maintenance should ask for this version by name.
The care that differs from a normal bouquet
Never mist a coated arrangement and keep it away from a humidifier, because moisture streaks a painted film and clumps loose glitter into grey lumps that cannot be brushed out afterwards.
Change the water on the usual schedule, and wipe any stem carrying paint below the waterline before you do, since that paint flakes and clouds the water.
Stand the vase on a tray or a folded napkin for the first week. Loose glitter lifts with a soft dry brush, while a damp cloth simply spreads it across the surface and into the grain of the wood.
Handle the heads as little as possible. Every touch takes a little of the finish onto a thumb, and it does not come back.
The one thing that catches people out
A coated petal holds its shape long after the stem has given up. So a gold bouquet can look intact on the day it is genuinely finished, and the usual freshness check on the bloom tells you nothing useful.
Read the stems and leaves instead. Softening leaves and a slimy stem end mean the same thing here as anywhere else, whatever the heads are doing.
How much gold a bouquet can carry
Past roughly a third of the volume the arrangement stops reading as flowers and starts reading as a decorative object, which is sometimes the brief for a stage or a corporate handover and sometimes a quiet disappointment.
White, deep burgundy, dark foliage and charcoal wrapping all carry gold well. Silver in the same bouquet does not, since two metals side by side cancel each other and both look cheaper for the company.
Gold bouquets suit round-number anniversaries, a golden wedding, a new year, an opening night. When one is going to an office or a restaurant in Side rather than to a home, ask for gilded components instead of sprayed heads, because nobody on a busy reception desk wants to be brushing glitter off a counter every morning.
