Carnation bouquets: the flower that outlasts the table it stands on

Spray carnations in soft dusty shades arranged in a round bouquet

Two weeks in clean water is ordinary for a carnation. Three is not unusual. Almost nothing else sold as a cut stem holds that pace, and the reason is structural rather than lucky.

The stem is woody and narrow, the petal count is high, and water loss through the bloom is slow.

The one thing that kills it early

Ethylene. Ripening fruit gives it off, and carnations answer more sharply than most cut flowers: buds stop opening, open blooms curl their petals inward, and a bunch with ten days left goes to sleep in one or two.

A fruit bowl on the same table is therefore the worst place in the house for them. The top of a fridge in a small kitchen is the second worst, and a windowsill above ripening tomatoes is not far behind. Move the vase into another room and the same bouquet behaves like a different one.

Cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes do the same thing for the same reason, which is why carnations sulk in a hallway beside an open street door.

Cutting a carnation properly

The stem carries visible swollen nodes along its length. Cut between them and never through one, because water moves poorly across a node and a stem trimmed at the joint drinks far less than one trimmed a centimetre below.

The rest is routine: leaves off the lower third, clean vase, fresh water every two or three days, a fresh cut each time.

Carnations also cope with warmth. A room that roses and tulips find too hot will not shorten them much, which matters in a flat where the heating cannot be turned down.

What a modern carnation bouquet looks like

Carnation stem being cut between two swollen nodes

The flower carries an old reputation as the cheap, dutiful choice, earned by decades of identical bunches of short red singles standing bolt upright. Nothing about the plant requires that. Spray varieties put several heads of different sizes on one stem and give a loose, uneven outline. The colour range now runs through dusty pinks, apricot, cream, lime and two-tone edges. Put those into a round spiral build with eucalyptus and varied stem heights, and the old association never arrives at all.

Length matters as much as colour. Short stems in a tight upright bundle look institutional; long stems in a relaxed hand-tie do not.

Where they earn their place

Anywhere the flowers have to survive without attention. A desk, a rented flat, a hospital room, a house someone visits at weekends. The bouquet still looks like a bouquet long after the person has stopped thinking about it.

They travel well too. The heads are tough, the stems do not snap, and an hour in a courier's hands in Side shows on them far less than it would on a rose.

Carnation bouquets are bought for the long week, not for the first ten seconds. Nothing about them shouts across a room. If someone wants flowers still standing when the next visitor arrives, this is the bunch that manages it.
