Baskets with alstroemeria: the arrangement you send to people you will see again

Basket of alstroemeria on a reception desk in an office

Some flowers make a statement and then have to be lived up to. A basket of alstroemeria makes a smaller one on purpose, which is why it turns up in the situations that repeat: a colleague back after an illness, a neighbour who fed the cat, a family member on an ordinary birthday, a thank you to an office that helped with something dull.

It carries no romantic reading at all, and that is useful.

Why the occasions suit the format

An arrangement on soaked foam arrives complete, so nobody has to leave a meeting to find a container. It stands on the surface it was put on and asks only for water poured at the rim, which makes it the right thing to send into a workplace, a ward or a reception area where a bouquet would sit in its wrapper until somebody took pity on it.

The flower adds its own argument. Alstroemeria has almost no scent, so a shared office is not obliged to like it, and the display keeps going for a fortnight or so in clean water because each umbel opens its buds in sequence rather than all at once.

That combination is undramatic and reliable, and both words are compliments here.

The markings decide the character

Look at an alstroemeria petal from close up and it is not a plain colour. The inner petals carry dark streaks and speckles over a lighter ground, and the throat is usually yellow or green, which is what gives the flower its slightly wild, garden appearance next to a smooth rose.

From two metres away those markings vanish and only the ground colour is left.

This matters when choosing shades for a basket. Pale creams and whites read as pale creams and whites across a room, while the deeper pinks and purples turn into a single tone and lose the detail that made them interesting in the shop. If the arrangement is going to be seen mostly from a desk chair a metre away, the marked varieties earn their place, and if it is going into a foyer, the plainer shades do more work.

Where the format loses

Against roses and peonies it loses on the single large bloom. Nothing here reads as one big flower, so the effect at close range is fine-textured rather than grand, and a gift meant to impress with scale is better built on something else or on a mix where alstroemeria fills between larger heads.

It also loses on stiffness. The stems are hollow and flexible, which is why a courier carries this arrangement upright: laid on its side for a couple of hours, the tips of the stems curve upwards and stay bent.

What it wins on is duration and indifference to neglect. Baskets with alstroemeria hold their shape long after a comparable rose arrangement has been thrown out, and the only regular task is pinching off spent buds and yellowing leaves, since the leaf tends to give up before the flower does.

Sent to someone in Side who is at work all day, it will still be standing when they finally get round to looking at it properly on Sunday morning. That is a low bar for a gift and a surprisingly hard one for cut flowers to clear.
