Eleven tulips: the size that fits an ordinary vase

Eleven is the point where a bouquet reads clearly as a gift while still creating no problems for the person receiving it. It goes into a standard household vase, travels in one hand and does not require clearing a table.

• Trim a couple of centimetres every other day if you want to keep the original shape.
• Keep the water shallow, three to five centimetres, which is all a tulip wants.
• Use cold water and keep the vase away from a radiator.

Tulips are the only common cut flower that carries on growing after being cut.

Eleven tulips work as flowers for no reason at all and as flowers for a small occasion: congratulating a colleague, arriving at somebody's home, a gesture with no romantic weight behind it, a spring date.
