Tulips delivered in Stockholm: the spring awaited after a dark winter

Tulips in Stockholm are almost a national affection. Sweden is among the countries where tulips are bought most of all: in winter and early spring they stand in nearly every home. After the long dark winter they're the first to bring colour back into a room, and Swedes greet them with special joy.

This flower is just as good on its own as in company. Its simplicity is deceptive: in a bouquet tulips look fresh and smart without any fuss — exactly in the spirit of Scandinavian lagom.

Which tulips come to Stockholm

Some tulips are Dutch, from the Royal FloraHolland auction. But Sweden has a strong tradition of its own: in winter and early spring the stalls fill with local greenhouse tulips grown close by, with only a short trip to Stockholm. Here are the popular varieties:

  • Strong Gold — bright yellow, classic, sturdy.
  • Ile de France — rich red, a firm bud.
  • Foxtrot — double pink, peony-like.
  • Negrita — purple-violet, striking.

How to care for tulips

Tulips keep growing even in the vase — that's normal. Put them in cool water and don't pour too much: tulips don't like deep water. Keep them away from radiators and fruit. Change the water every day and tulips will last 5–7 days.

"A tulip is a living flower even after cutting. It reaches for the light and grows in the vase. Turn the bouquet's other side to the window and within an hour you'll see how it has changed."

— Elin Bergström, florist, Stockholm, 12 years in the trade

When tulips are given in Stockholm

The peak of the tulip season falls in late winter and spring. They're given on Alla hjärtans dag (Valentine's Day, 14 February), on International Women's Day on 8 March, and simply to lift the mood in the darkest months. By spring the city is fairly bursting into bloom.

Trim the stems straight rather than at an angle, and keep the bouquet in a cool spot. We deliver tulips across Stockholm, payment in Swedish kronor (kr, SEK).

A tulip is always about hope and warmth. Give one, and spring comes home a little ahead of schedule.
