Peonies in Alanya: buy them in bud, and know which month you are paying for

A peony bouquet that looks unfinished on arrival is usually the right one. Florists judge a peony by squeezing the bud: if it gives slightly, like a marshmallow, it will open within a day or two and then last five to seven days in water. A bud hard as a marble may never open at all. That single test explains most of what matters when choosing peonies in Alanya, from why the courier brings closed heads to why the same bouquet costs more in November than in May.

Why peonies in Alanya arrive in bud, and how to tell a good one

Peonies are cut and shipped as tight, coloured buds, and a bud at the right stage does its opening in the recipient's vase over a day or two. The stage growers aim for is called the marshmallow stage. Colour is already showing, the petals are still sealed, and the bud feels soft and springy between two fingers.

Placed in warm water in a bright room, such a bud opens in roughly a day or two and holds for five to seven days. A bud picked too early stays hard and green and will not open; a bloom that arrives fully open is beautiful that evening and little more. For a birthday or a dinner it makes sense to order a day or two ahead, so the flowers open on the right evening. The photo the florist sends before dispatch shows what stage the buds are at.

This is how peonies reach the florist: colour already showing, petals still sealed.

Nearly every cut peony belongs to one species, Paeonia lactiflora, which reached Europe from China in the mid-eighteenth century and has since produced several hundred cultivars with fragrant, bowl-shaped blooms of eight to sixteen centimetres. In China the peony has been called the king of flowers for centuries; the Qing dynasty declared it the national flower in 1903, and Luoyang remains the centre of its cultivation.

The cultivar that dominates the trade is Sarah Bernhardt, bred by Lemoine in 1906: a very large double bloom in dark rose-pink with lighter edges, and the source of more than twenty million Dutch stems a year. Coral Charm, registered by Samuel Wissing in 1964, works differently. The semi-double bloom opens up to eighteen centimetres across and changes colour as it goes, from coral-cerise through orange tones to a pale pink-cream. Semi-doubles do not last as long as doubles, so Coral Charm is bought for the show, not for the vase life.

The peony rose is not a peony. Peony roses are roses with a layered, peony-shaped bloom, most of them English varieties from the David Austin nursery, and unlike peonies they have no off-season. Florists pair them with real peonies in winter; the roses themselves live in the roses section.

When peonies in Alanya are in season, and why the price moves

A peony plant flowers for about seven to ten days a year and spends the rest of it growing roots, so no single country can supply peonies for long. The trade works as a relay. The Netherlands, the largest grower, cuts from late April into June and sold more than seventy-eight million stems in 2018. Israel and Italy, where spring comes earlier, cover February to April. From October to December the stems come from the southern hemisphere: Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

Summer is the odd gap. The only place with peonies in July and August is Alaska, where the University of Alaska planted its first trial rows in 2001 to fill that window. Growers there sold around 350,000 stems in 2018, a small harvest that goes mostly to summer weddings. For a buyer the map translates into a simple rule: a peony in May and a peony in November are the same flower at very different prices. Off-season, it pays to order early and let the florist choose the shade.

Stem count, colour and format: bouquet, box or basket

Peony heads are large, which is why the catalogue lists five stems as a bouquet in its own right and a bunch of thirty-five as a gift for a big occasion. The whole scale sits in peonies by quantity. If the recipient grew up in Russia or a neighbouring country, keep the count odd: even numbers there are reserved for remembrance. Shades are easiest to compare in peonies by colour, where white peonies with eucalyptus sit at the quiet end and coral and raspberry at the loud one.

The format usually follows the address. A wrapped bouquet suits a hand-to-hand delivery and a home with a vase. For a hotel, an office or anywhere the flowers may wait, boxes with peonies and baskets with peonies suit better: the stems stand in soaked floral foam and last about as long as in a vase if watered daily. Mixed bouquets with peonies form the largest subsection. Peonies go in with stocks, eucalyptus, spray roses or peony roses, so there are fewer peonies in the bunch and other flowers supply the volume, which is one way to send peonies out of season without paying for an armful.

Peony delivery in Alanya and keeping the bouquet fresh

Ordering peonies in Alanya starts with a photograph. The florist assembles the bouquet and sends a picture before the courier leaves the workshop, which leaves time to swap a ribbon or a stem. Delivery in the city centre is free; if the peonies are in stock with the florist, the bouquet card shows the delivery time, and an order for a set date and hour is accepted for any zone. Full terms and the zone map are on the delivery page. Nobody calls the recipient in advance unless the sender asks, the courier knows only a name and an address, and payment goes through Visa or Mastercard on the site with nothing paid to the courier.

At home, peonies want a fresh angled cut and clean water changed every day. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and keep the vase away from direct sun, radiators and the fruit bowl, since ripe apples and bananas release ethylene that ages petals faster. Once the flowers are out, a cool spot slows them down, so a bouquet moved to the coolest room overnight keeps its shape longer.
