Lavender roses: what the shade sits well with

Lilac spray rose heads with grey-green eucalyptus

Lilac is a mixed colour. There is blue in it and there is pink, and depending on what stands next to the bunch one of those two comes forward while the other disappears, which is why the same stems can look cool and silvery in one arrangement and frankly pink in another.

Nothing else in the rose range behaves quite so much like a chameleon.

The safe neighbours

White and cream do the least damage. Put a lilac cluster beside a cream head and the lilac holds on to its blue side. It reads as smoke instead of purple. The pale flower picks up a faint cool cast in return. The pair looks chosen rather than assembled, which is the point of putting them together at all.

Grey-green foliage works for the same reason. Eucalyptus, dusty miller and anything with a matte surface support the cool half of the colour, while glossy dark green leaves push it towards pink and make the bunch look sweeter than intended.

Deep burgundy is the strongest partner of the three. It is dark enough not to compete and it shares the red end of the spectrum. The contrast in tone lets the small lilac heads read individually instead of blurring into one mass.

The combinations that fight

Warm yellow is the obvious mistake. It sits opposite lilac on the wheel, both colours are pale, and neither wins, so the arrangement ends up looking accidental rather than bold.

Bright pink is the subtler mistake. It drags the pink out of the lilac. The two shades end up separated by a hair, close enough to look like a mismatch and far enough apart to be visible.

Pure black packaging is worth mentioning as well, since it flattens the colour completely.

Light does half the work

Warm bulbs are the enemy of this shade. Under a yellow lamp the pigment loses its blue component and the flowers turn a tired grey-brown by evening, even when they are perfectly fresh, and people blame the florist for something the lighting did.

Bunch of lilac roses on a table in cool daylight

Daylight restores it. A north-facing room, a shaded windowsill or an office with cool overhead lighting gives lavender roses back the tone they had in the workroom. This is one of the few cases where it is worth asking the recipient where the vase will stand.

Direct sun is a separate problem. Ultraviolet breaks pale pigment down faster than saturated pigment, and a couple of bright days on a sill will bleach the petals towards grey while the flowers are still structurally fine.

Building a bunch around it

Keep the palette narrow. Two or three shades within the same temperature give the smoky effect people are after. A mixed bunch with several bright colours in it turns the lilac into a filler and wastes the reason for buying it.

A courier in Amsterdam carries these clusters easily enough, since the heads are small and take a knock better than large open blooms, and what actually matters at handover is the paper: sand, grey and unbleached shades let the colour survive being unwrapped, while a coloured film changes it before anyone has seen the flowers properly.
