Roses via Schiphol for a birthday in Amsterdam, and what goes beside them

Kenyan roses fly into Schiphol and go on to the Aalsmeer flower auction, southwest of Amsterdam, and Kenya and Ethiopia send more roses to that market than any other country. Those routes shape the Dutch rose market, and a birthday in Amsterdam still comes down to the bud, the colour and whatever stands beside the rose, since every bouquet is put together once the order comes in.

Delivery terms are shown by zone, whichever neighbourhood the party happens to be in. Ordering works the same way for hotel guests and orders from abroad, so a sender who has never set foot in Amsterdam goes through the same form as someone round the corner.

Stem length and an opened bud: picking a birthday rose in Amsterdam

Kenyan stems usually come shorter than Ecuadorian ones. Among roses, including long-stemmed Ecuadorian ones, the longest Ecuadorian stems run from around seventy centimetres to over a metre, grown at altitude where the stalk has room to stretch before the bloom opens. A stem that long suits a tall vase on its own; a shorter Kenyan one sits better in a compact bouquet made for carrying in the hand.

A French rose is not a variety, whatever the name suggests. It is an ordinary rose a florist finishes by hand, bending the outer petals back one by one so the flower arrives already open rather than tight in bud. The effect reads as a looser, fuller bloom from the first look, with nothing left closed to unfurl later.

It is worth checking the colour against the name rather than assuming it from the title alone. A bouquet named for red French roses is red throughout, one named for white and pink roses holds both of those, and the title is the safest guide to what is actually inside.

Lilies in pink, gerberas and summer hydrangea beside the rose

White lilies and chrysanthemums carry a funeral association in the Netherlands, so florists steer away from them for a birthday and reach for a lily in colour instead, or set it beside a gerbera. A pink or orange lily reads as festive in a way the white one does not, and paired with gerberas it keeps the arrangement clearly celebratory.

Lilies, gerberas and lisianthus are all greenhouse flowers cut throughout the year, so a birthday in January has the same choice of them as one in July. Hydrangea is the exception: it is a summer cut from the northern hemisphere, which puts it on the table for a June, July or August birthday rather than a winter one. It also drinks more than most cut flowers, taking in water through its petals as well as its stem, which is why a florist stands it straight in water rather than leaving it wrapped and dry.

A colour scheme built from several of these at once, rather than one flower alone, is what a mixed bouquet is for.

Birthday flower delivery in Amsterdam when the party is at a restaurant

Where the flowers are going decides the format as much as the occasion does.

  • A hand-tied bouquet – travels well to a home with a vase already waiting for it.
  • A basket – stands on a table on its own, no vase needed.
  • A flower box – holds its stems in soaked foam, suited to a restaurant table where nobody hunts down a vase between courses.

For a restaurant delivery, the timing is arranged with the venue's own staff rather than guessed at. The bouquet can then be set down to land with the toast or arrive just as dessert comes out, at a moment the birthday person is actually there to see it.

The recipient is not called ahead of time unless the sender asks for that. A card can be signed or left anonymous, and it costs nothing either way; the florist sends a photo of the finished bouquet before the courier sets off with it. Most orders go out on the day they are placed, a chosen date and time are accepted for any zone in the city, and the time a particular bouquet needs is shown on its own page.

A restaurant table points towards a box, a home with a vase leaves room for roses or a mixed bouquet, and either one can travel with something small alongside it from the gifts to go with the bouquet.
