Gladioli open from the bottom up, and that changes everything
A gladiolus is built like a spike rather than a bouquet. One stem carries a long row of buds that open in order, starting at the base. While the top is still closed the lowest flowers are already finishing, so the display travels slowly upwards over a week and a half.
Because of that, gladioli cannot be judged on the day they arrive. They will not look the same on any two consecutive mornings, which is either the appeal or the frustration depending on what you expected.
Getting the top buds to open
The commonest complaint about gladioli is that the upper buds dry out without ever opening. The remedy has been known in the trade for decades and takes five seconds.
Pinch off the tip of the spike, removing the two or three smallest undeveloped buds at the very top. The stem stops pushing energy into that tip and opens what has already formed below it.
After that the care is standard with one adjustment. The stem is thick and top heavy, so the vase has to be tall and genuinely stable or the whole thing goes over. Fill it half way, change the water every second day, and snip off the spent flowers at the bottom as they go.
Height matters more than count
Gladioli are bought by height as much as by quantity, and a product photograph rarely conveys either.
1. Five stems already make a bouquet with real vertical presence. 2. Seven to nine need a heavy floor vase or a tall one on a sideboard. 3. Stem length runs from around seventy centimetres to a metre and a half, which decides where the arrangement can physically go.
The colour range is among the widest in the cut flower trade: white, cream, salmon, crimson, lilac, near black burgundy, and bicolours with a contrasting throat. Two shades in one bunch is usually the limit, since a vertical spike is already a strong shape on its own.
A gladiolus does not belong on a coffee table. It wants a floor, a windowsill or a tall chest of drawers.
Occasion and reading
Across the post Soviet world gladioli are tied to the first day of school, and for a lot of people that is the immediate association. Elsewhere they read as a classic formal flower for anniversaries and civic occasions.
The practical strength is duration. Around two weeks is normal, because new buds keep opening long after the first ones are done.
For delivery in Antwerp the constraint is size. A long stem does not fit a standard box, so these bouquets travel differently. Worth remembering if the recipient works in a building with a security desk or lives in a walk up.
