Roses in a hat box: the lid comes off and the object stays
A hat box is built to be looked into from above. The round card wall, the lid and the ribbon all steer the eye towards one plane, and everything the florist does happens there. That makes the top surface the part worth studying before you accept the work.
Inside sits a preserved rose, a cut bloom whose own sap has been replaced with a glycerine based solution, so the arrangement takes no water and sheds no petals.
How to read the top row
Look straight down first. The heads should sit close enough that no foam, no moss and no card show between them, and the outer row should reach the wall without leaving a visible ring of base material round the rim. A slight dome is the sign of deliberate work, while a perfectly flat surface usually means the buds were set at whatever height was quickest. One head sunk a few millimetres below its neighbours will pull your eye every time you walk past the shelf. Threads of glue across a petal and a darkened stem cut showing under the top row are the marks of a build finished in a hurry.
Weight says something too.
A box with a proper foam base and a full underlayer feels heavier than its size suggests. A light one often means the buds stand on a raised platform with empty space beneath them, which holds up on a table and gives way the first time somebody lifts the box by one side.
The lid rarely goes back on
Most people take the lid off on the first evening and never replace it. From then on the box behaves like any open arrangement, which means it collects dust, and dust on a rose petal is patient work rather than a visible layer. Colour drops half a tone over a few months and nobody catches the moment it happens. A soft brush worked from the centre of the bud outwards takes it off, and so does a hairdryer on its cold setting at arm's length. A damp cloth helps nothing here, since the card mottles, the ribbon stains and a preserved petal darkens where water touches it.
Keep the lid anyway. It turns the arrangement back into a closed object for a move or a long car journey. That is the only occasion it will be needed again.
Diameter changes the room, not the shelf
A nine bud box fits a bedside table. A box of twenty five holds the middle of a dining table without crowding the plates, and the large builds of fifty and upwards want a surface of their own, usually a console or a low chest.
Card colour works with the buds rather than behind them. Black sharpens a white rose into a graphic shape. Beige and powder soften the same rose until the outline nearly dissolves, which suits a bedroom and disappears altogether in an office.
What the format is not good at
It travels well and it displays badly at height. Set the box on a high shelf and you see the card wall rather than the flowers. Anything above eye level is wasted on this shape and better given to a dome or a tall arrangement.
Roses in a hat box hold their colour for one to three years, and the limit is almost always light rather than time. Ultraviolet takes the pigment apart, red goes to brown ahead of every other shade, and a windowsill in Baku does more damage over one summer than three years on a shaded shelf.
