Rose delivery in Barcelona: varieties, Sant Jordi and Mediterranean logistics

Barcelona has a special bond with the rose. On 23 April the city celebrates Sant Jordi — the day when the whole of Barcelona turns into one long rose stall: tradition has you give a red rose and a book, and millions of roses change hands across Catalonia in a single day. So a Barcelonan knows the rose well and chooses it with a careful eye — for colour, for bud density, for stem length.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions, spray roses, market-style bunches in kraft and hat boxes. Formats run from a compact bunch of seven stems to a grand 51 or 101. Hotels, restaurants and offices in the Eixample and along Diagonal tend to order boxes and larger arrangements.

Which varieties to choose

The main supply comes from Dutch glasshouses through the Royal FloraHolland auction and in large air shipments from Ecuador and Colombia — Spain has long-standing ties with Latin American plantations. In season, local roses from the Maresme coast north of the city join in. Here is the working breakdown.

  • Freedom, Red Naomi — the red classic and the signature rose of Sant Jordi. Freedom is deep crimson with a dense head and 60–80 cm stems, lasting 10–14 days with care. Red Naomi is a velvety dark ruby with a softer petal. Both for romance and anniversaries.
  • Avalanche+, Mondial — white and cream Dutch classics. A neutral base for mixed arrangements and wedding work. Avalanche+ holds its form 12–15 days in good conditions.
  • Explorer, Freedom (Ecuador) — varieties with 80–100 cm stems and a large, dense head. The high-altitude Andean climate gives them exceptional length. For large display bouquets, baskets and corporate gifts.
  • Sweet Avalanche, Tiffany — blush-pink and soft tones. A calm palette for bright Mediterranean interiors.
  • Garden roses (David Austin) — a cupped bud and a scent of myrrh and peach. For weddings and a heartfelt personal gift.
  • Spray roses — several buds per stem, lighter and airier in composition. Good for everyday gifts and accent stems.

Occasions and stem counts

A single stem is a spare note of attention — and a Sant Jordi gesture in itself. Seven to nine stems is a romantic gift without theatrics. Twenty-five signals a proper celebration or declaration. Fifty-one and 101 are reserved for anniversaries, engagements and milestone dates.

Barcelona keeps no rigid colour rules, but the red rose belongs firmly to love and to 23 April. Bold tones sit happily in a bouquet for a lively gathering in Gràcia, while for the quieter interiors of Sarrià or Pedralbes, white, cream and blush pink are the usual choice.

Freshness and logistics

The city's wholesale heart is Mercabarna-flor, one of the largest flower markets in southern Europe. Dutch lots from Aalsmeer (by air into Barcelona–El Prat or by refrigerated road) and direct air shipments from Colombia and Ecuador converge here. From cut to the recipient's door takes two to four days; cared for properly, the roses then last 10–14 days.

The Maresme coast is a chapter of its own, with its history of flower-growing and the market at Vilassar de Mar. In season, a local rose reaches the bouquet especially fresh, having travelled tens of kilometres rather than half of Europe. Ecuadorian and Colombian varieties make up for the longer trip with stem length and bud density, achieved by the cold mountain climate.

"In Barcelona the rose isn't only a gift, it's part of the culture. On Sant Jordi everyone buys one, and by that day the customer has become an expert: they look at the bud, feel the stem. Carry a rose across the ocean and the cold chain is non-negotiable — otherwise it shows on the shelf at once."

Delivery specifics in Barcelona

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild, +10 to +15 °C by day, and frost is a rarity. Summers are hot and humid, +28 to +31 °C in July and August. The main risk for cut flowers here is summer heat and humidity rather than frost, so in the warm months bouquets travel with cooling inserts and delivery is scheduled for the morning or evening. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for roses.

We deliver roses across all districts of Barcelona: the Eixample, Gràcia, Ciutat Vella (the Gothic Quarter, El Born, El Raval, Barceloneta), Sant Antoni, Poble-sec, Sants, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Pedralbes, Poblenou and Horta-Guinardó. Payment is in euro (€, EUR). Peak dates: Sant Jordi (23 April), San Valentín (Valentine's Day, 14 February), Día de la Madre (Mother's Day, the first Sunday of May), Navidad (Christmas) and Todos los Santos (1 November). Roses sell out fast for Sant Jordi — order a week ahead.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45° — ideally under water — and strip any leaves below the waterline to prevent rot. Place in a clean vase with cool water and a sachet of flower food or a pinch of sugar. Change the water every two days.

In a Barcelona flat the rose's main enemy in summer is heat and air conditioning blowing straight onto the bouquet. Keep roses in the coolest part of the home, away from direct sun and the draught of the AC unit. Keep them away from bananas, apples and pears: the ethylene that ripe fruit emits shortens cut-flower life by around a third. Roses suit almost any occasion — message our team to match variety, colour and stem count to the occasion and budget.
