Hot deals: reading the listing before you order

Discounted mixed bouquets photographed on a shop bench

Most disappointment with a discounted bouquet starts at the ordering screen rather than at the door. The listing is read quickly, the flower names are skimmed, and the picture is taken as a portrait of the exact bouquet that will arrive. It is not one, and knowing that changes how you choose.

Start with the description, not the price.

What a good listing tells you

A listing worth ordering names the material. It says which flowers form the body of the bouquet, roughly how many stems there are or how wide the finished arrangement sits, and what the wrapping is. That is enough to picture the object on a table.

A vague listing is not automatically a bad bouquet, but it shifts the decision to somebody else. If a card says only that the bouquet is a florist's choice in a colour family, the sensible move is to ask what is in the cooler that morning and to say what the flowers are for. A florist answers that in a sentence.

The photograph shows the method of assembly. It shows the proportion, the shape and the palette, and those carry over; the individual heads in front of the camera were sold days ago.

Why the section keeps changing

Cut flowers arrive in batches and demand does not arrive in the same shape. A delivery bought for a busy weekend meets a quiet one, and by midweek there are more stems of one variety in the cooler than the ordinary rhythm of the shop will move.

Those stems are perfectly alive. What has run out is time, not quality, so they go into ready-made bouquets at a lower price instead of standing in a bucket until they are worth nothing to anybody.

Other entries appear for duller reasons: the tail end of a crop, display pieces that spent a day under the lamps, an order cancelled an hour before assembly. None of that affects how long the flowers last in water at home.

What you are actually buying

The one real difference from the main catalogue is that these bouquets cannot be repeated. Behind an ordinary listing sits a standing supply; behind a discounted one sits a specific quantity of specific stems, and when they are gone the listing goes with them.

That produces three consequences worth holding in mind.

  • An item can disappear from the section within a day, and that is the section working as intended.
  • Substitution is likelier here than elsewhere, and it should be agreed with you before assembly rather than after delivery.
  • Same-day and next-day slots are the safe ones; ordering a deal for later in the week invites a phone call.

Vase life is the same as anywhere else. A stem behaves in water according to what it is and how it was handled, not according to which page of a shop it was listed on, and any promise to the contrary in either direction is marketing.

Where a deal is the wrong tool

Fixed requirements and rotating stock pull against each other. A wedding palette, a corporate colour, a particular variety a person has loved for years: order those from the main catalogue, with time in hand, and treat the price as the cost of certainty.

Everything looser belongs here. Flowers for the house, a gesture with no date attached, a bouquet for someone who will be pleased by any good flower in season.

If the recipient in Beijing needs the bouquet at a particular hour, say so when you place the order. A florist confirms or offers an equivalent while there is still room to move.

Treat hot deals as today's window rather than a permanent shelf. The contents differ by the evening, and the better assemblies tend to be taken on the same day they appear.
