Discharge day flowers: the bouquet that ends up in every photograph

Large pale bouquet held at a clinic entrance

A discharge bouquet knows its job in advance. It is held in the doorway, photographed, and then carried in a car with people and luggage. Everything else about it is secondary.

It has to photograph well

Small flowers and a busy mixed composition turn into a blur on a phone camera. Large heads — roses, peonies, hydrangea, gerberas — keep their shape in a snapshot taken from six feet away in bad light.

Colour is decided by the photograph too. A pale bouquet against pale clothing disappears; something saturated or simply contrasting holds. White roses against a white newborn blanket is the most common miss.

Nobody has a free hand

At the moment of discharge one person is carrying a baby and another is carrying bags and paperwork. The flowers are usually held by a third person, or they wait in the car.

So weight and stem length matter more than volume. A huge armful looks impressive right up to the point where it has to be put down. A boxed arrangement stands by itself, does not roll across a back seat and does not spill water into the upholstery.

Weather

The bouquet spends between five and thirty minutes outdoors, and that is the dangerous part of its life.

Boxed floral arrangement standing on a car seat

In frost, exposed blooms are damaged within minutes — roses and gerberas darken at the petal edges before they reach the car. Wrapping helps, but keeping the flowers in the car until the moment of the photograph helps more. In heat the problem reverses: a parked car turns into an oven and the water in a box warms up, so an hour on a back seat visibly ages the arrangement.

Timing

Discharges are booked for a specific hour, so the flowers have to arrive before it rather than "some time that day". The most reliable approach is a delivery to the home address the previous evening or that morning, taken along by whoever is collecting.

Delivery straight to the hospital entrance works, but only if one of the party is already there to accept it — a courier will not wait inside.

The second bouquet

A separate, smaller one for the doctor or midwife is common, and it is a different register: compact, calm in colour, no personal message. If both are going to Beijing on one order, say so in the comments — they are built differently.
