Mono bouquets in Berlin: Europe's tulips, chrysanthemums and gerberas

Germany buys its tulips, chrysanthemums and gerberas mainly from EU growers, with over 80% of cut flowers arriving via the Netherlands, while roses come largely from Kenya. All three are available as mono bouquets in Berlin, one variety and one colour in each wrap, which narrows the choice to three questions: which flower, what colour, and who it's for.

Tulips, chrysanthemums and gerberas: single varieties grown in Europe

Germany's own flower farms cannot cover demand, in either volume or variety, so the country imports most of what its florists sell. More than 80% of cut flowers reach Germany through the Netherlands, and that figure includes stems grown further afield and resold through the Dutch trade. Tulips, chrysanthemums and gerberas travel mainly from EU growers, while roses come largely from Kenya, so these three make the shorter trip across Europe. Dutch greenhouse tulips are cut from December to May, which makes a tulip mono bouquet a flower of Berlin's colder months into spring. Chrysanthemums, gerberas and alstroemeria are greenhouse flowers too, cut all year round, so a single-variety bunch of any of them is never out of season.

Lily, calla, hydrangea or chrysanthemum: choose a colour, not white

German custom ties chrysanthemums, white ones especially, to cemeteries and remembrance. A bouquet made entirely of white flowers, whether lilies, callas, hydrangeas or chrysanthemums, strikes some recipients the same way. A mixed bouquet can soften white with a second colour, but a mono bouquet carries only one, so that single colour speaks for the whole bunch. For a birthday, a new job or any cheerful occasion, these four are worth choosing in colour rather than white. Gerberas, tulips and alstroemeria don't carry the same association. Where the shade you want isn't shown on a particular bouquet, describe the occasion in a chat message and the florist will send a few options with photos and prices before payment.

Dianthus, alstroemeria or hydrangea heads for a Berlin desk

In German offices, colleagues often club together for a birthday, a wedding, a new baby or a retirement, and flowers suit a promotion particularly well. For a desk where the bouquet has to last, chrysanthemums, dianthus and alstroemeria hold up for two to three weeks in water, longer than a rose, which lasts around a week. A chrysanthemum's leaves yellow before its flowers do, so they're worth stripping off as they go. Hydrangea works differently: a few large heads already make a full bouquet, since each stem carries one broad bloom. Hydrangea drinks more than other flowers, and a drooping head can recover after standing in cool water for an hour or two.

Mono bouquet delivery in Berlin works the same way for an office as for a home: give the company name and floor, and where a reception desk controls entry, the courier leaves the bouquet there and lets the sender know who took it. The finished bouquet is photographed before the courier sets off, the delivery slot is shown on the bouquet's page, and most orders go out the same day they're placed.
