Peonies in Berlin: in season for Muttertag, and how to choose them

Muttertag, the second Sunday in May, falls inside the weeks when German fields cut their own peonies, from late April to June, so peonies in Berlin bought for Mother's Day can come from close to home. Outside that window the flower is still on sale, imported from further away, and the rest of Berlin's flower calendar runs well past one spring date. In these weeks the real choice is about shade and format, not where the stem was grown.

A bouquet made only of white flowers reads differently here than it might elsewhere: some take it for mourning, and white chrysanthemums in particular are tied to the cemetery rather than the table.
