Peony delivery in Berlin: varieties, wedding season and the marshmallow-bud rule

Berlin is a city built for grand occasions: Berlin Fashion Week, international art fairs, elaborate Hochzeit ceremonies in the halls of Charlottenburg Palace and the garden venues of Tiergarten. The peony fits all of these settings. Voluminous, fragrant, luxurious without trying too hard — it works as well on a wedding table at a Charlottenburg venue as it does in a corporate gift bouquet on Unter den Linden. Berlin's wedding florists have made the peony their signature flower for good reason: it photographs beautifully, fills a space generously, and lasts longer in the vase than most people expect.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for formal presentations. Supply flows through Aalsmeer from European glasshouses, from German nurseries during peak season, and from Chilean and New Zealand farms in the off-season — keeping peonies available in the catalogue nearly year-round.

Key varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety has a distinct job — from a wedding arch to a quiet personal gift. They differ in bud form, colour, fragrance and vase longevity.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — pale pink fully double bud up to 18 cm across, honey-vanilla fragrance. A classic from 1906 that works in virtually any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
  • Karl Rosenfield — deep crimson, dense bud with a rich colour. Pairs well with the burgundy and wine-toned interior palettes popular across Berlin in autumn and winter.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a raspberry fleck at the centre. One of the most photogenic varieties in any catalogue, a favourite with wedding photographers and social media floristry.
  • Coral Charm — transitions from saturated coral-orange at opening to soft cream-peach as it fully blooms. A leading variety of the 2020s, prominently sought during Berlin Fashion Week events.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre, light vanilla scent. For understated romance and nude-toned wedding palettes.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony. Larger flowers, longer bloom, 10–12 days vase life. Suited to premium corporate gifts and wedding decor.

Bud stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is what florists call the marshmallow stage. A bud that is fully coloured but still soft to the squeeze — press with your fingers and it gives like a marshmallow. At this stage the peony opens within one to two days and lasts seven to nine days. A hard green bud may not open at all. A fully open bloom will last two to three days at most.

Every batch we send is hand-sorted to this standard: only marshmallow-stage buds go out for delivery. For a recipient in Berlin, that means a full bloom cycle, not a view of something already at its end.

Seasonality and logistics

Germany's natural peony season is late May to mid-June. During this window, European glasshouse peonies fill the Berlin Blumengroßmarkt at their most favourable price point. From July through February, supply shifts to the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — prices are 1.5 to 2 times higher, but quality and vase performance remain solid.

For wedding bouquets and milestone events, we time deliveries to the anticipated bloom moment. A peony for a Charlottenburg ceremony needs to greet guests in full flower, not as a closed bud — that takes precise planning and communication with the client.

"A peony is not a flower for last-minute orders. If you want an impression at a Berlin wedding, order three to four days ahead. Give the bud time to open in the recipient's home. A freshly delivered closed peony is a promise — and it delivers the next day."

Delivery specifics in Berlin

Berlin's temperate continental climate means winters of −5 to −10 °C with weeks of snow, and dry summers reaching +28 to +32 °C. For peonies this calls for clear seasonal measures: in winter, insulated thermal bags and frost protection; in summer, cool packs and morning delivery windows (before noon). The most comfortable season for peony delivery in Berlin is April through June and September through October, when temperatures create no stress for the bud or the logistics chain.

We cover all main districts: Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, Friedrichshain, Neukölln, Tempelhof, Pankow and Treptow. Prices are in euros (€, EUR). Peak dates: Weihnachten (Christmas, 24–26 December), Ostern (Easter), Muttertag (second Sunday in May) and Valentinstag (14 February). Peonies sell through quickly around Muttertag — order seven to ten days ahead.

Home care

After delivery, re-cut stems at 45°, strip leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep away from fruit, radiators and direct sunlight — ethylene and heat halve the peony's vase life.

Berlin flats heat up readily in winter, easily reaching +22 to +24 °C. For a peony, that means accelerated opening and a shorter cycle. Place the bouquet in the coolest part of the flat — near a bedroom window works well. In summer heat above +28 °C, move the vase to the fridge overnight: the peony gains two to three extra days. Fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) actually perform best in a moderate +18–+20 °C room: the scent becomes more distinct and lasting at these temperatures.
