Peony delivery in Berlin: varieties, wedding season and the marshmallow-bud rule

The peony fits all of these settings. Voluminous, fragrant, luxurious without trying too hard — it works as well on a wedding table at a Charlottenburg venue as it does in a corporate gift bouquet on Unter den Linden. Berlin's wedding florists have made the peony their signature flower for good reason: it photographs beautifully, fills a space generously, and lasts longer in the vase than most people expect.

• Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony. Larger flowers, longer bloom, 10–12 days vase life. Suited to premium corporate gifts and wedding decor.

Bud stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is what florists call the marshmallow stage. A bud that is fully coloured but still soft to the squeeze — press with your fingers and it gives like a marshmallow. At this stage the peony opens within one to two days and lasts seven to nine days. A hard green bud may not open at all. A fully open bloom will last two to three days at most.

Every batch we send is hand-sorted to this standard: only marshmallow-stage buds go out for delivery. For a recipient in Berlin, that means a full bloom cycle, not a view of something already at its end.

Seasonality and logistics

Germany's natural peony season is late May to mid-June. During this window, European glasshouse peonies fill the Berlin Blumengroßmarkt at their most favourable price point. From July through February, supply shifts to the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — prices are 1.5 to 2 times higher, but quality and vase performance remain solid.

Delivery specifics in Berlin

Berlin's temperate continental climate means winters of −5 to −10 °C with weeks of snow, and dry summers reaching +28 to +32 °C. For peonies this calls for clear seasonal measures: in winter, insulated thermal bags and frost protection; in summer, cool packs and morning delivery windows (before noon). The most comfortable season for peony delivery in Berlin is April through June and September through October, when temperatures create no stress for the bud or the logistics chain.

Home care

After delivery, re-cut stems at 45°, strip leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep away from fruit, radiators and direct sunlight — ethylene and heat halve the peony's vase life.

Berlin flats heat up readily in winter, easily reaching +22 to +24 °C. For a peony, that means accelerated opening and a shorter cycle. Place the bouquet in the coolest part of the flat — near a bedroom window works well. In summer heat above +28 °C, move the vase to the fridge overnight: the peony gains two to three extra days. Fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) actually perform best in a moderate +18–+20 °C room: the scent becomes more distinct and lasting at these temperatures.
