Baskets with lilies: order them a few days before the date
A lily basket arrives mostly closed. Buds sit along the upper part of each stem, the lowest one opens first, and the rest follow it upwards over the days that come after. What the courier hands over is the beginning of an arrangement rather than the finished one.
Nobody can hurry that along in a useful way.
Warm water and a radiator nearby will force a bud open sooner and cost the flower most of its life in exchange. So the timing question is settled at the ordering stage: for a date that matters, a basket with lilies is booked with a couple of days in hand, and the recipient watches it fill out.
Which occasions this suits
The slow opening is an advantage when the gift has to last past the day itself. A recovery, a retirement, a move into a new flat, a thank you that is meant to sit in a hallway for a fortnight rather than peak at a dinner and be thrown out on Sunday.
It works against you at a party. Guests arriving at seven see green buds and two open heads, and a photographed table wants flowers that are already at their fullest.
There is also the reason people choose the basket rather than a bouquet in the first place. Nothing has to be unwrapped, cut or put into water, the foam underneath is soaked before assembly, and the only job left is topping it up from the top edge every day or so.
Scent decides the room
Fragrant varieties fill a space quickly and keep filling it while the flowers stay open. In a hall, a stairwell or a large sitting room that settles into a background. In a small bedroom, a windowless meeting room or a shared ward it does not settle at all, and by evening the person living with it has stopped enjoying the gift.
Ask about the room before ordering, not about the colour.
Dining tables are their own case. Sweet floral scent argues with food, so the arrangement usually goes to a console or a side table and the table itself stays clear.
Pollen, and why a basket makes it worse
The anthers are heavy, orange and greasy, and what falls from them behaves like dye on fabric. In a tall vase most of it drops past the furniture. A basket sits low, its flowers barely clear the rim, and the pollen lands on the arrangement's own ribbon, moss and paper, none of which can be cleaned afterwards.
Open flowers are usually stripped of their anthers in the workshop. The buds that open later at home are yours to deal with, ideally within a few hours of each one unfolding, using a tissue or small scissors.
Powder already on a surface comes off with sticky tape. Rubbing it or wetting it turns a loose dusting into a permanent mark.
One thing to check before you send
Lilies are toxic to cats, every part of the plant included, and a basket standing at floor or table height is far easier for an animal to reach than a vase on a shelf. If there is a cat at the address in Buenos Aires, choose something else entirely rather than hoping the arrangement stays out of reach.
