Tulips with delivery in Cape Town: varieties, the southern spring, and Spring Day

In Cape Town the tulip is a guest of the cool season. Here, in the Southern Hemisphere, its time falls in the local winter and spring: from late winter through October demand rises, and on 1 September — the informal Spring Day — the city reaches especially for bright bouquets. The mild, wet Cape winter suits the tulip; the dry hot summer does not, so the season here is concentrated, and delivery timing matters. We built the catalogue with that taste in mind.

The category covers single-colour bouquets from 11 to 50 stems, mixed spring arrangements, and gift boxes with tulips and companion flowers — daffodils, ranunculus, anemones. Most tulips in Cape Town are of Dutch origin; the Western Cape greets spring with flowers anyway — in August and September the coast and Namaqualand bloom, and interest in bright bouquets rises everywhere.

Which varieties to choose

Dutch growers release hundreds of tulip varieties each year. We select those that combine stem strength, long vase life, and an interesting look — the criteria the Cape buyer values.

  • Strong Gold — golden-yellow, a classic tulip on a tall, even stem. Pairs well with white and greenish spring arrangements.
  • Red Impression — deep red, a large bud, a very sturdy stem. Suited to large single-colour bouquets of 25 stems or more.
  • White Dreamland — pure white, slightly matte. Neutral and elegant, good in mixed spring bouquets.
  • Purple Flag — rich purple. A popular option for those after a colour beyond the red-yellow-white palette.
  • Queensday — pink-and-orange bicolour. A decorative group, with a slightly fuller bud shape.
  • Black Hero — deep dark purple, almost black, a double tulip. An unusual choice for modern interiors in the City Bowl and on the Waterfront.

Occasions and seasonality

The tulip is a flower of the southern spring in Cape Town. Its peak falls in late winter and early spring: Spring Day (1 September), followed by the fresh spring weeks of September and October. In these months the tulip is readily chosen for City Bowl and Waterfront offices, for birthdays, and as a light, understated gesture. Valentine's Day in February has almost no tulip to work with — it is high southern summer, and that date goes to roses.

Tulips are given as single stems less often than roses — formats of 15, 25, and 50 stems are more typical. In spring, mixed-colour armfuls are especially in demand: several shades in one bouquet read more vividly than a single colour.

Freshness and logistics

Imported tulips arrive in Cape Town by air from the Dutch Aalsmeer and Royal FloraHolland auctions through Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Lots are distributed to the city's florists through wholesalers and the sellers of the historic Adderley Street flower market in the centre. Tulips arrive in closed buds under deep refrigeration (+2…+4°C); they finish opening at the recipient's, which is standard practice and extends shelf freshness.

A key point for the Cape climate: on dry, sunny spring days, especially with the south-easterly wind, tulips open noticeably faster. For a large event, take delivery the evening before rather than the morning of the day itself, especially when warm, windy weather is forecast.

"The tulip is the most temperature-sensitive flower in our work. The Cape spring is deceptive: cool and damp in the morning, then the sun and wind do their work by midday — and the buds open before your eyes. For large orders I recommend delivery the day before the event, not on the day. And remember: the tulip here is seasonal; in high summer there is almost none."

Delivery specifics in Cape Town

Cape Town sits by the sea, with a Mediterranean climate. Winter (June–August) is cool and rainy, +16–18°C by day and near +8°C at night — the mild, damp conditions suit the tulip, with no frost and no parched air. Spring warms gradually, but dry, sunny days with wind speed bud opening. Summer (December–February) is dry and hot, +24–27°C, with the strong 'Cape Doctor' wind — not a tulip season.

We deliver across all districts of Cape Town: City Bowl, Gardens, Sea Point, Green Point, V&A Waterfront, Clifton, Camps Bay, Constantia, Bishopscourt, Newlands, Claremont, Rondebosch, Wynberg, Bo-Kaap, Woodstock, Observatory, Hout Bay, Tokai, Durbanville, Bellville, Century City. We take corporate orders for offices, restaurants, and hotels throughout the season. Payment is in rand (ZAR, R). For Spring Day and the peak spring weeks, book 3–5 days ahead — demand for tulips rises noticeably then.

Care at home

Tulips keep growing in the vase — that is their quirk: the stems lengthen by 3–5 cm after they go in the water. Cut them at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, and change the water every day or every other day — tulips are very sensitive to bacteria in the water. A cool room temperature of +15–18°C extends their life to 8–10 days.

Don't add anything extra to the water — aspirin and a copper coin work worse than clean, cool water changed regularly. On dry, windy days, keep tulips in the coolest room, away from direct sun and open windows, and move them to the refrigerator overnight to slow the buds from opening.
