New Year baskets: the one format that lives at floor level
A vase claims a shelf. A basket does not need one, and that is why it usually ends up on the floor beside the tree, on a hearth, on a wide sill or at the foot of a hall mirror, in the part of a room that no other flower format can use.
Floor level changes what the piece has to survive.
It gets walked past all evening, coats brush it, a hoover comes near it, and anything low and wide is exactly at the height a dog or a small child investigates first. Wired cones come out easily in a curious hand, glass baubles at the edge of a basket are the first casualty of the season, and candles at floor level sit right where a trailing sleeve passes them. None of that is a reason to avoid the format, but it does decide where in the room the basket goes: a corner the traffic flows around beats the middle of a walkway every time.
What sits inside
The mechanics are the same as any built arrangement: soaked florist foam in a lined tray, conifer holding the outline, berried branches, cones and dried material worked through it, fresh flowers placed last. Woven walls hide all of it, which is generous to the person who built it, so check from the inside. Lift a branch at the rim and look for damp foam, a tray that does not slide and no bare block showing through.
The non-floral contents come in two kinds, and it is worth knowing which you have. Items standing on the base lift out cleanly and leave the piece intact. Items mounted on picks leave a hole when pulled, and something has to fill it.
Weight, briefly
Wet foam plus a woven base plus glass adds up faster than the size suggests, and the handle on many baskets is decorative rather than structural. Carry it from underneath with both hands, and expect the courier to do the same.
Where the format loses
Against a bouquet, whenever the recipient has to travel on with the gift the same evening. Against a table arrangement, whenever the only free surface is a dining table, since most baskets sit too high and too wide to leave people a sightline across it. And against a potted plant, if the household is away for a fortnight, because foam dries out and there is no fixing that after the fact.
Its own case is just as clear. New Year baskets suit a family home, a shared office, a reception area, anywhere the gift belongs to a room rather than to one person, and anywhere nobody wants to be responsible for a vase.
Care comes down to two habits. Top the water up through the rim every day or two until the foam stops taking it, and keep the basket clear of radiators and fan heaters, because dry warm air strips the needles within days and they collect in a neat ring around the base.
Candles that came with the basket are best lit somewhere else entirely. Take them out and use them on a plate or a holder, since dried cones, wood and week-old greenery catch quickly, and a low piece on the floor is the last thing anyone in the room is watching.
If nobody will be home when it arrives, agree a time rather than trusting the hallway: a basket left in Chicago in an unheated stairwell loses more in half an hour than in the whole journey to the door.
