Baskets with irises: a gift that asks nothing of the person receiving it

Blue irises arranged in a low basket on a desk

Think about where the arrangement will actually stand before you think about the flowers in it. An iris basket goes to places a vase never reaches, and that, more than the colour or the count, is what the format is for.

The water sits inside the foam already. Nobody has to find a container, cut stems, or clear a shelf in a kitchen that belongs to somebody else.

Where it ends up

A hospital ward is the clearest case. Staff there have opinions about vases, glass, and anything that spills, while a soaked foam base in a rigid basket stays where it is put and can be carried out of the room in one hand. Irises help twice over, since they carry almost no scent, and a closed ward with four beds in it is no place for a flower that fills the air.

An office desk is the second case. The recipient is at work all day, the arrangement has to survive a weekend without anyone touching it, and a colleague who is handed a wrapped bouquet at eleven in the morning spends the rest of the day looking for something to put it in.

The third is a flat somebody has just moved into, where the kettle has been found and nothing else has.

How the gift reads

Blue and violet carry very little of the romantic reading that roses bring with them. That makes the format usable in situations where a bouquet would say more than you meant: a manager, a colleague you know slightly, a man who would rather not be handed something pink.

Nothing about it is showy either. The shape is upright and plain, the leaves are flat green blades, and the whole thing looks composed rather than celebratory, which is why it survives being sent to an address where you cannot be sure of the mood.

That restraint has a limit. For a big anniversary, a stage, a room full of guests expecting scale, this is the wrong choice, and a large mixed arrangement earns its place instead.

The first day is not the finished picture

Irises travel closed. The bud is a green spike with a line of colour along the seam, and it opens roughly a day after delivery, three outer segments folding down and three inner ones standing up.

Hand topping up water at the edge of a basket of irises

So the basket is at its smallest on arrival and at its fullest a day or two later, once the heads have taken up the space the florist left for them between the stems.

Say this to the recipient. People who have not seen it before assume something arrived unfinished, and a short line at handover saves that conversation entirely.

After the first week

A spent iris does not fall apart tidily; it collapses into a damp twist that makes everything beside it look worse. Pull it out with its stem and cover the gap with a leaf, since the hole left in the foam no longer holds water for a new flower.

Top the foam up from above every day or so, pouring slowly at the edge of the basket until it stops taking water.

The handle is decorative on most baskets of this kind, so lift from underneath rather than trusting the weave with the weight of wet foam. A courier in Didim will hand it over with the base supported, and it is worth passing that on. Baskets with irises are undemanding for a week, and then they end quickly, all at once, which is a fair trade for a gift nobody has to look after.
