One hundred and one peonies: what you are actually paying for

Large peony bouquet built on a frame in a florist workshop

At this count the flowers themselves account for most of the outlay, and everything else is rounding. That is worth saying plainly, because people often assume a large bouquet is mainly wrapping and labour.

Peonies are among the more expensive cut flowers to begin with. Multiply that by a three-figure count and the arithmetic stops being gentle.

Where the money goes

Stems first. Peony has a short season in open ground, and outside it the flowers come from glasshouses or from growers on the other side of the equator, which changes what a single stem costs long before anyone starts building anything.

Selection second, and this is invisible in the finished bouquet. To fill an even dome of one hundred and one peonies, a florist needs a larger pool to choose from than the count itself, because heads have to be graded by size and by how far advanced they are. Whatever does not make the grade goes into smaller work, so the sorting cost sits inside the price whether or not anyone mentions it.

Labour third, and it is not trivial. A bouquet this size is built on a frame, often in two bundles brought together at the final tie, and the work takes far longer than the same florist would spend on four bouquets of twenty-five.

What the extra volume buys, and what it does not

It buys presence in a room and a photograph that reads instantly. Nothing else in a catalogue does that with fresh flowers.

It does not buy time. Peonies at any count open over a day or two, hold, and then drop petals in quantity, and one hundred and one of them fade on exactly the same schedule as nine. The vase life per flower does not improve because you bought more of them.

Nor does it buy convenience. This bouquet arrives needing a bucket, two people to carry it and a corner of a room to stand in, all of which is a cost paid by the recipient rather than the buyer.

The alternatives worth pricing against it

A smaller count of larger, more advanced heads often photographs almost as well and behaves far better at home. Head size varies a lot between varieties and between seasons, and a well-grown open peony covers considerably more space than a tight one.

Peonies from a large bouquet divided between several vases

Splitting the order is the second option. Several medium bouquets delivered to different people, or one bouquet plus a plant, spread the same outlay across more than one moment.

The third is timing. In peak season peonies are at their best and their most reasonable, and the same money goes further than it does out of season, when the count has to be filled with imported stock.

If you do order it

Ask for a single colour or two close shades. Mixed palettes at this volume break the dome into patches and lose the effect the count was bought for.

Ask for tight buds if the date is a day or two out, and for open heads if it is needed the same evening. Ask where it will stand before it is delivered, because a bouquet of this size in a small flat becomes a logistical problem within an hour of arriving. And check that someone in Didim can meet the courier at the entrance, since nobody can carry a bouquet like this up a staircase and open a door at the same time.
