70 cm roses: where the length comes from

Long-stemmed roses graded into bunches at a flower market

A rose is cut at the length the plant gives. Nobody adds stem to a flower, so seventy centimetres means a variety bred for cutting, grown under conditions that let it build a thick stem and a large head, and picked from a crop where the long grades are the minority.

That is the whole reason the price climbs with each step up the scale.

Graded before anyone sells it

Cut roses are sorted by stem length at the farm, tied into bunches by grade and packed upright in tall boxes. The long grades take more box volume per stem, travel in the same cold chain and occupy the same shelf, which is why two roses of identical variety and colour can carry very different prices with only the length between them.

Inside a bunch the stems should match. If some are visibly shorter than the rest, that bunch was made up from leftovers, and a bouquet built from it will sit unevenly however carefully it is tied.

Season shows in the stem

Growing conditions change through the year, and the flower records them. Long stems with heavy heads come from plants given time and light, so the same variety can run shorter and thinner in a poor stretch and thicker with a fuller bud in a good one.

Peak demand pulls in the opposite direction.

Around the dates when everyone buys roses at once, the market clears whatever exists, the long grades go first and what remains is shorter than usual. Order early for those dates if the length matters to you, because a week of waiting will not conjure a grade that has already been sold. Outside those peaks the long stems are easier to get and often better fed. This is also why a shop will sometimes offer a different variety at the length you asked for rather than the variety you named.

Reading the stem itself

Thickness is the honest signal. A genuine long-grade stem is noticeably thick at the cut and holds its line if you lift the rose horizontally by the middle. A thin stem at the same length sags into a curve, and it will do the same in the vase once the head takes on water.

Leaves tell a similar story. Firm dark foliage close to the bud belongs to a well grown plant; sparse pale leaves on a long stem usually mean the crop was pushed.

The bud should feel firm and slightly springy at its base.

What that means for you

Seventy centimetres is a real gift of scale, visible across a hall, and it needs a heavy vase and a place away from foot traffic. It is also awkward on public transport, in lifts and in restaurants, and it will be trimmed shorter at home almost every time.

If you want 70 cm roses for a particular day, ask which variety carries that grade at the shop rather than asking for length alone. And if the recipient in Fethiye has nowhere tall to put them, a shorter grade of the same rose will look better on their table a week later.
