Peonies with delivery in Geneva: varieties, lakeside weddings, and a short season

In Geneva, a peony needs no explanation. Its wide, densely packed, fragrant head speaks for itself — you choose it when you want a bouquet to land without a card. It carries the weddings of the Cologny estates and the Geneva countryside, the big birthdays, the celebrations of spring. But its season is brief: at these latitudes, the bulk of the crop falls in May and June. We built our offer with that calendar in mind.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 9 to 51 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, plus hatboxes for corporate and wedding orders. The peak of the peony coincides in Geneva with the height of the wedding season: receptions in the estates above the lake, historic halls of the Old Town, and terraces facing the Léman follow one another precisely over these weeks.

Which varieties to choose

We work with four sources: Dutch-grown peonies for volume and consistency, French garden varieties on long cutting stems, historic American hybrids that have become world standards, and a short window of local peonies in May–June. Below are the varieties most often requested in Geneva.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — soft salmon-pink, large head, lasting fragrance. One of the most recognised wedding varieties in the world; in Geneva, the default request for ceremonies.
  • Coral Charm — coral turning to peach as it opens. Semi-spherical in its early stage. Looks superb in the contemporary arrangements of the city's restaurants.
  • Karl Rosenfield — deep raspberry-red, dense bud, intense scent. A classic for milestone-birthday and celebration bouquets.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — snow-white with a cream heart. Ideal for the bridal bouquet and white ceremonial arrangements.
  • Bowl of Beauty — pink outer petals, cream-yellow centre. Anemone form — an original, visually striking choice for large installations.
  • Juliet (David Austin peony rose) — technically a rose, but close to a peony in shape and character. Used as a stand-in out of season or to reinforce the scent of a peony arrangement.

Occasions and seasonality

May and June are the great peony months in Geneva. That is when most weddings cluster, especially in the lakeshore estates and the city's historic halls. The peony is a traditional element of bridal décor: the bride's bouquet, table settings, arches, buttonholes.

The season lands exactly on Mother's Day, celebrated in Switzerland on the second Sunday of May — the peony reigns there. Beyond weddings, it is chosen for milestone birthdays, the late-May and June graduations, and as an opening or housewarming gift. In February the peony does not yet exist: for Valentine's Day, roses and tulips take over.

Freshness and logistics

Dutch peonies reach Geneva from the Aalsmeer and Royal FloraHolland auctions by refrigerated truck — about 800 km and an overnight run. Lots are distributed to florists through Swiss wholesalers. In May–June local growers add to the supply, while French garden varieties from Brittany and Provence arrive by fast freight at the peak of the season.

Peonies are delivered at the "tight bud" stage — still closed; opening takes 2–4 days depending on temperature and variety. If you need open peonies for a set date, say so when ordering: we'll time a lot with the right head start. At +18°C a peony opens fully in about 3 days, at +10°C in 5–6 days.

"A peony demands planning. A bride who calls the day before for open peonies is always a scramble. The rule is simple: order at least a week ahead, receive 4–5 days before, ripen in a cool room. On the day of the ceremony they'll be at exactly the right stage."

Delivery specifics in Geneva

Geneva's climate is temperate and softened by the Léman, but the first heat of June is the main risk for open peonies: warm, dry air speeds petal drop, and a single heatwave day above +30°C is enough to shorten their stand. Lots intended for events are prepared with the forecast in mind, and we keep the flowers in cold storage at +4…+6°C until assembly.

We deliver peonies across Geneva: the Old Town, Eaux-Vives, Pâquis, Plainpalais, Carouge, Champel, Servette, Cologny, Florissant, Grand-Saconnex, Petit-Saconnex, Meyrin, and Vernier. Payment is in Swiss francs (CHF). For wedding orders, allow at least 7–10 days. For June celebrations, book as early as April: the peony and wedding peaks coincide, and good material goes early.

Care at home

Peonies in closed bud keep well at +4°C for 5–7 days. To speed opening, move them to a room at +18–20°C. Cut the stems at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, use cool water, and change it every 1–2 days. A Chrysal sachet encourages opening and extends the stand.

Do not place peonies near fruit — ethylene from ripe apples and bananas causes premature petal drop. As Geneva flats are often well heated, keep the bouquet in the coolest room. Open, at +18–22°C, peonies last 5–7 days; at +10–14°C, up to 10 days. Message our manager and we'll help match the variety and stem count to the occasion and budget.
